Underpass Works and Temporary Closure of Newmarket Road
Tarmac Infrastructure have been contracted by the Greater Cambridge Partnership and Cambridgeshire County Council to construct the Chisholm Trail and Abbey-Chesterton Bridge Project. Together this path and bridge, along with an underpass of Newmarket Road, will form Phase 1 of a new foot and cycle route through the city. Further information about the project can be found at www.greatercambridgepartnership.org.uk/chisholm.
We have now reached the stage of the project where we are planning to install an underpass under Newmarket Road. To do this work safely we will need to temporarily close Newmarket Road to traffic.
While some of these closures will be overnight, we will also need to close Newmarket Road to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, for a week between 8 pm on Friday 26 March and 6 am Friday 2 April. The map below shows the section of Newmarket Road which will be affected by the closures.
Enabling Works:
January – September 2021
Some footpaths will be closed with pedestrians having to use the footpath on the other side of the road. Narrow lane traffic management will be in place on the road and will remain open to two-way traffic.
Underpass Installation
Week-long closure - 8 pm Friday 26 March to 6 am Friday 2 April
Newmarket Road and Footpath Full Closures. Diversions in place.
Overnight closure - Five nights between late May and August
Dates will be advertised nearer the time Newmarket Road and Footpath Full Closures. Diversions in place.
Diversions
When Newmarket Road is closed to traffic the following diversions, shown on the map below, will be in place: -
For Motor Traffic: - Signed diversion routes will be in place for motor traffic while the road is closed.
For Bus Users: - Buses that currently use Newmarket Road will be diverted. The bus stops on Newmarket Road between Coldhams Lane Junction and the McDonalds roundabout will be temporarily suspended with no service. Bus operators will advise of changes to their services nearer the time. For details on Stagecoach bus services please visit www.stagecoachbus.com or follow the operator on Twitter @stagecoach_east.
For Cyclists and Pedestrians: - There will be a separate, signed diversion route for cyclists and pedestrians across Coldhams Common. For pedestrians who are unable to use the diversion route there will be a free of charge shuttle service available from one side of the closure to the other. We are currently finalising arrangements to ensure this service is COVID-safe. Once we have confirmed the details they will be available at www.greatercambridgepartnership.org.uk/chisholm
We would like to apologise for any delay and disruption these works may cause. All staff will be working according to government guidelines in relation to safety and social distancing.
When completed the underpass will mean those using the Chisholm Trail will not have to use a pelican crossing to cross Newmarket Road – giving pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorised users a safe crossing and helping motor traffic flow more freely along Newmarket Road.
