New Abbey Chesterton Bridge lifted into place

Abbey Chesterton Bridge

Chisholm Trail construction update

The Abbey Chesterton Bridge has been lifted into place – a key milestone in the delivery of the flagship Chisholm Trail walking and cycling route.

The 40m-long bridge was lifted over the River Cam last week to mark a major step in the construction of the Chisholm Trail.

Once complete, the Chisholm Trail will mean thousands of people can walk or cycle on a mostly off-road and traffic-free route connecting Cambridge North to Cambridge Station, making it easier and safer to get to jobs, education and green spaces around the city.

Construction is being carried out by Tarmac and is expected to conclude in autumn 2021, when the bridge and phase one route is due to open. The new jetty and path linking Ditton Meadows to Stourbridge Common are now likely to open in early 2021.

A new fender in the River Cam to provide protection to the jetty, which will link Stourbridge Common and Ditton Meadows, will be installed next month.

Have your say on experimental walking and cycling measures

A consultation on trial measures introduced to make it easier for people to travel around Cambridge during Covid-19 is open.

The trials – known as Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders (ETROs) – include the closure of various streets to through motor traffic and the extension of the Silver Street bus gate in the city centre to support active travel like cycling and walking.

The GCP is asking people whether these experimental measures should be made permanent, changed or removed.

The consultation closes on 18 December.

Histon Road construction Nov 2020

Histon Road construction update

Construction work is progressing on the Histon Road scheme.

Improvements to the Huntingdon/Histon Road junction have nearly finished. With changes to traffic islands and footpaths, we have been able to widen the road and create wider, separate cycle lanes.

Work continues between Histon Road and Gilbert Road, as well as the section between Gilbert Road and Kings Hedges Road.

When the project is complete in summer 2021, a new bus lane and significantly improved walking and cycleways will make it quicker and easier for people to travel into the city from the A14 and villages to the north - helping to cut congestion and improve air quality.

Waterbeach to Cambridge consultation open

Options for a multi-million-pound transport scheme that could transform public transport, and walking and cycling journeys to the north of Cambridge have been set out in a public consultation.

People can now have their say on the emerging options for the Waterbeach to Cambridge public transport and active travel project.

The project – along with other dedicated public transport and active travel schemes – aims to reduce congestion and improve air quality along the busy A10 corridor to Waterbeach.

The consultation closes on 14 December.

CSETs consultation ongoing

Plans for a new dedicated public transport route that will provide quick and reliable journeys for people travelling to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus from the A11 have taken a key step forward.

The Cambridge South East Transport project will significantly improve journeys by public transport and active travel to the city and key employment sites.

An eight-week public consultation is asking people for their views on the detailed design of the scheme and forms part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the project.

The online survey invites comments on all aspects of the scheme in addition to area specific questions

The consultation closes on 14 December.

Park & Ride bus travelling on Newmarket Road

Cambridge Eastern Access

Proposals for the Cambridge Eastern Access project to provide reliable and safe walking, cycling and public journeys along the busy A1303/A1134 routes are also now out to consultation.

The options could be delivered in two phases – the first phase looking at adding bus priority measures and other on-road improvements to Newmarket Road, as well as the possibility of a relocated and expanded Newmarket Road Park and Ride.

The second phase would deliver a new dedicated public transport route. This phase is dependent on decisions in the emerging local plan and the potential development of the Marshall's site.

The consultation closes on 18 December.

Ditton Lane cycling work completed 2020

Ditton Lane Cross City Cycling project

The final piece of a new first-class cycling route that will make it safer and easier for people to travel into Cambridge has been completed.

The existing path and cycleway in Ditton Lane has been widened to between 2.2m and 2.5m to put the finishing touches to the Ditton Lane/East Cambridge Cross City Cycling scheme.

The route is part of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s £8m Cross City Cycling network, which has seen thousands of people benefit from better journeys on foot and bicycle – encouraging active travel to improve air quality and help reduce congestion on the roads.
