Cllr Lewis Herbert gives speech at GCP's Annual Conference

A world class public transport system and accelerating the construction of thousands of new homes and jobs in Greater Cambridge were part of the vision set out by the GCP at our annual conference last week.

Dame Kate Barker, who chairs the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Independent Economic Commission, GCP Chair Cllr Lewis Herbert and Mayor James Palmer outlined the challenges and opportunities Greater Cambridge faced with its economic growth.

Conversation to continue on City Access

We will continue our discussion with the public to understand the potential benefits of public transport improvements and to ask for the public’s feedback on developing options for tackling congestion.

These options include physical measures, such as parking restrictions, traffic signal optimisation and/or reallocating road space to public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure.

There are also a range of potential financial measures – such as workplace parking levies or road-pricing – to encourage people to switch to sustainable transport from using the private car.

We’ll be speaking with the public early next year, with a number of events and detailed information available online.

Work begins on Chisholm Trail and Abbey Chesterton Bridge

Work on the Abbey Chesterton Bridge and first phase of The Chisholm Trail is underway.

The Chisholm Trail, which allows pedestrians and cyclists to travel on a mostly off-road route from Cambridge North to Cambridge Station, is being funded by the GCP.

Together with the Abbey Chesterton Bridge, funded by the county council, the trail will improve access to employment sites such as the Cambridge Science Park and Biomedical Campus.

Oakington Rural Travel Hub public consultation ongoing

There's still time to have your say on our proposals for a Rural Travel Hub at Oakington.

The consultation, which launched in November, has reached its mid-way point but there is still plenty of time for people to have their say on the proposals.

There are two potential options for the design of the site, which could include features such as car parking, travel information in real time, and cycle lockers. The consultation closes on 7 January.

CSETS phase one

CSETS Phase one work to begin soon

Work on phase one of the Cambridge South East Transport Scheme to improve road safety and walking, cycling and public transport journeys along the A1307 will begin in January.

The first lane of the eastbound dual carriageway near Linton will be hatched off and a new left turn will be created to enable vehicles to turn left safely into Dalehead Foods, which will also give greater visibility to vehicles leaving the site.

Work will soon follow on upgrading the traffic signals at Linton Village College, the installation of additional cycle lockers and storage at Babraham Park and Ride, and the creation of an eastbound bus lane approaching Linton.

It marks the beginning of phase one of the scheme and a £14m package to improve road safety, bus priority and to upgrade walking and cycling routes along the A1307 by the end of 2020.
