 Shape Your City
Almost 50 students from across the region attended a ‘hackathon’ on Saturday to
develop new ideas for improving the city’s public spaces. Shape Your
City was hosted by Cambridge City Council and the GCP to explore ideas on how to improve
urban spaces for future generations. Students visited key public spaces in Cambridge where they
worked in teams to come up with ideas on how they would change the space to
meet future needs, followed by presentations to a judging panel of councillors. Some of the students' ideas included underground bike parking, 'punt pots' for displaying plants and a revamped Market Square.

The Executive Board will be asked to approve the launch of a public

Cambridge South East Transport Study
The public’s views on proposals to improve public transport to the south east of Cambridge will be presented to the Executive Board on 11 October. A £14m package of ‘quick wins’ (phase one) to improve road safety and bus journeys along the A1307 by 2020 was approved in July. Three long-term strategies were put forward in the consultation for phase two. Strategy one – a new segregated mass rapid transit route from the A11 to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and a new park-and-ride site near the A11/A505 – received the most public support (64 percent).
 Sawston cycle path upgraded
A cycle path in Sawston has been upgraded as part of a £4.6m package of ‘quick
wins’. Work
to widen and resurface part of an off-road route between Stapleford and Sawston
was completed in September. The rest of the
path, which runs between the two villages, will be upgraded by the winter. A stretch of a deteriorating path outside Sawston Village
College was also resurfaced.

Cambourne to Cambridge project
A decision on the GCP’s Cambourne to Cambridge public transport scheme has been deferred until the winter cycle of Joint Assembly and Executive Board meetings. This is to allow for the completion of detailed technical work by the Combined Authority’s consultants, aimed at ensuring the scheme meets alignment requirements with the CAM network proposals and other criteria. Members of the GCP are due to meet with Mayor Palmer this month to find out the outcome of the CA's review.
