Christmas trees
'Real' trees are recyclable and can be taken to the HRCs for composting or can be shredded for chippings which can be used as a weed suppressant mulch for your garden.
Check online for charities that will accept or collect trees in return for donations.
Nightingale House Hospice offers a free collection service for real Christmas trees in return for a donation towards patient care at the hospice. To book a collection, please visit nightingalehouse.co.uk/tree or call 01978 314292.
Remember to remove all tinsel and decorations and any pots or stands.
Artificial trees are made from a combination of materials and therefore cannot be recycled.
Unwanted trees in good condition may be accepted by some charity shops for re-sale and re-use.
Christmas lights
Any items that have a plug, use batteries, need charging or display a logo with a crossed out wheelie bin on, (see image) are known as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
These items, including Christmas lights or fairy lights, should not be put in your general waste bin (black bin) and can be recycled at your nearest Household Recycling Centre (HRC).

Batteries
Household batteries including 'button' batteries can be recycled at the kerbside with the rest of your recycling. Place your batteries in a clear bag and put them out with your recycling on your collection day.
We also accept household batteries and larger batteries, including car batteries, at our HRCs.
Laptop battery packs, mobile phones, power tools, and such items as DIY tools contain lithium and must be completely discharged before taking to a Household Recycling Centre.
They must never be included with your household batteries for collection at the kerbside or placed in your black sack.
