Mutuals Registration Function Update

An update from the Financial Conduct Authority in our role as registering authority for mutual societies.

Law Commission consultation

The Law Commission are reviewing the Friendly Societies Acts 1974 and 1992. They have published a consultation paper asking a range of questions. We encourage you to look at the paper. You have until 11 June 2025 to respond to it.

You can also read a summary of the paper and factsheet for members

As well as friendly societies, all types of society under the Friendly Societies Act 1974 are covered. This includes working men's clubs.

Help for your society

We've published information to help societies on our website. This includes a guide for new societies. As well as a document to help a society with opening a bank account. And links to our forms and other resources.

Is your address correct?

Societies must have a 'registered office address'. This is the address in your rules, and on the Mutuals Public Register. We will use this address to write to you. You have to register any change to this address with us. Check the Mutuals Public Register to see if your address is right.

Submitting accounts

Societies have to send accounts to us each year. We publish these on the Mutuals Public Register. We act to deal with non-submission and will work with societies to help get submissions in on time. Where a society does not comply, we act. Last year, 141 societies saw their registration cancelled by us. We want societies to take steps to avoid this. Register on the Mutuals Society Portal, and you will be sent a few reminders of deadlines.

Mutuals Society Portal - how it works

You ‘register’ your own account on the Mutuals Society Portal. This is unique to you. You will be asked to verify your email address, so we know it works. You then ‘associate’ yourself with your society. You can associate with up to 5 societies at a time.

Once you have submitted your association request, we send a letter to the society. This goes by post to the society's address, so we know they want you to be linked to them. The letter includes a ‘one-time-passcode’.

You need to get this letter from the society. Once you have it, log in to the Mutuals Society Portal and enter that passcode. The code is active for 25 days, so don't delay.

The letter also tells you what to do if someone has made an unauthorised request to be linked to your society.
