Most local authorities have significant funding gaps for next year. East Sussex County Council is facing a funding gap of over £55 million. As local authorities have a legal responsibility to set a balanced budget, this means making some difficult decisions about how the Council spends its money in future.
Every department at the Council will need to find savings. Adult Social Care is currently consulting on 11 proposals that would help to close the gap, including a proposal to stop funding post-treatment recovery services for drug and alcohol misuse. The consultations close on 28 November 2024 and decisions are expected to be made in February 2025.
September marked National Recovery Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about substance dependency, support those on their journey to recovery, and celebrate their achievements. The initiative focuses on promoting public understanding of problem substance use as a health condition, reducing stigma, and showcasing successful recovery stories as a source of inspiration and support for others.
In collaboration with local recovery providers, East Sussex County Council worked throughout the month to promote awareness in key locations, including Eastbourne and Hastings. Additionally, some individuals participated in the UK Recovery Walk held in London, which serves as a powerful demonstration of unity and commitment to supporting recovery across communities.
