Get ready for Ready Set Read! Arriving in your local library this summer!
Join the Summer Reading Challenge to unleash the power of play, sport and physical activity through reading.
We have teamed up with The Reading Agency and the Youth Sport Trust to challenge primary school children to read six library books over the summer holidays. As they read, children collect stickers and prizes, and after reading six books they earn a certificate and medal.
Children can read any library book they want, including: eBooks; audiobooks; comic books and even eMagazines. A shared story with a friend or family member also counts towards the challenge. The challenge starts on 8 July, our website has more information, including joining the challenge, book suggestions and forthcoming summer events.
The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all children, free of charge with a host of activities taking place throughout the summer.
More Crime novels are borrowed than any other fiction genre. Why? According to bestselling author Sophie Hannah this is because Thrillers “prioritise pleasure and entertainment; guarantee a gripping plot. Evil is punished, and the good guys mostly win, after solving the puzzle. And all is right with the world. At least fictionally.”
Sussex is blessed with a bonanza of Thriller writers, and to celebrate we have a Sussex Crime Writers evening – at Hastings Library – in the presence of Sheila Bugler, Merryn Allingham, William Shaw and Chris Curran.
This July the Library is partnering with Bexhill Music Festival and Battle Festival of Music and Art.
Meet Philip Ardagh, Thomas Taylor and Sharon Elizabeth. There will be storytelling, raven kings and bunnies in boats!
The votes for the East Sussex Children’s Book Award 2023 have now been counted, and Michael Mann’s Ghostcloud is the Winner!
We received hundreds of glowing reviews, wonderful book jacket designs and imaginative pieces of creative writing that have been inspired by the books.
On our webpage you can view the artwork and some pictures from the celebration event, and all the shortlisted books are available at the library.
