With the coronation fast approaching many of us are gearing up to celebrate the symbolic religious ceremony of King Charles III’s reign as the new Monarch of the United Kingdom along with his wife Camilla as Queen. The official ceremony will be broadcast live on TV and radio on 6 May, but there will be many Coronation events in East Sussex taking place across the bank holiday weekend from 5 to 8 May.
While celebrating the King’s coronation will rightly take pride of place in the East Sussex calendar in May, it’s also a bumper month for other community events. From steam fairs to carnivals, craft markets to fund-raising walks, we’ve rounded up just a few of the events lined up for next month. Oh, and it’s also National Walking Month.
Children across East Sussex are being encouraged to walk, wheel or stride to school during Walk to School Week this month. The week, which takes place from 15 to 19 May is a Living Streets (the UK’s charity for everyday walking) initiative. It is run as part of May’s National Walking Month to encourage children in primary schools to stretch their legs and get active. We are giving each primary school a pack which contains resources for teachers and pupils. The children can earn stickers as they go with a special reward given at the end of the week.
One of Britain’s bestselling children’s authors visited Seaford library this month. Jacqueline Wilson, who is best known for creating the cherished characters of Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather, moved to East Sussex a few years ago and took time out to speak about her writing as well chat with young people and sign their books.
She also spoke to us about her love of libraries and East Sussex, what inspires her and what she enjoys about being about an author.
April has been Stress Awareness Month. Stress and poor mental health are two of the big challenges of our modern fast-paced society. Fortunately, it’s easier now than ever to talk about them. In East Sussex there’s lots of support available for anyone who needs it.
Removing the guilt, shame, and stigma around mental health, Stress Awareness Month encourages everyone to talk about stress. It urges us to open up about our mental and emotional state with friends, families, colleagues, and professionals.

Be #deeraware this spring
Drivers in East Sussex are being asked to be ‘deer aware’ this spring to avoid colliding with the animals on the county’s roads.
