Whether it’s the fairy lights or the daily dose of advent calendar chocolate, Christmastime often brings out a more charitable side of us. Perhaps it’s a search for meaning beyond presents or a realisation of all the many things we have to be grateful for. Either way, many of the charities we give to in December need our support all-year around. Here are some ideas to ensure our charity isn’t just a ‘December thing’!
As we go into the new year there are some small changes we can make that together add up to a big difference to ensure a healthier and happier 2023.

In the run up to Christmas, support workers at East Sussex County Council had great fun taking part in Christmas festivities and activities with clients across the county. But it’s not just at Christmas that our support workers bring cheer. Throughout the year, they make a huge difference to the lives of others.
If you’re passionate about helping others, working as a support worker could be something you’d find really rewarding.
Did you know, we use roughly 189 million batteries over Christmas? However, when it comes to recycling them, around a quarter of us are wrongly putting batteries in our household bins - and this can have explosive consequences!
Putting dead batteries in your waste or recycling bin can cause fires. This year there have been several serious fires at waste sites in East Sussex which were caused by lithium-ion batteries.
Don't let your batteries turn into zombies, recycle them responsibly!
If you live in Rother, Wealden or Hastings you can now recycle your batteries from home. Pop them into a carrier bag and place them on top of either your waste bin or recycling bin on collection day.
If you live in Lewes or Eastbourne areas, you can take your batteries to a household waste recycling site or to battery containers at supermarkets.
Refurbishment projects announced for three libraries
Customers will find it even easier to access services as three East Sussex Libraries undergo extensive refurbishment. Work will take place in Rye, Newhaven and Hollington to improve their layout, with children’s areas and study spaces being upgraded and new seating installed so users can browse services in comfort. Find out more about the refurbs.
Apprenticeship funding boost
Funding to cover the full training costs of an apprenticeship is being made available to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) across the county. New strategy to help children reach their potential
A new Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) strategy to enable young people to reach their full potential in every area of life has been launched. The SEND Strategy 2022-2025 will be used to inform the work of everyone working with children and young people with SEND across East Sussex, giving them the opportunities and support they need to achieve their ambitions and prepare for adult life.
