We know times are tough for many people in East Sussex.
Finding good advice, information and support on the cost of living can be confusing. So we’ve put all the advice and resources in one place to help people find what they need.
This page highlights the support that the government, local councils or volunteers can offer. You may be able to get help with money, food, heating, mental health and more.
If you need urgent help with food or utilities (gas, electricity or water) you might qualify for emergency support from the Discretionary East Sussex Support Scheme.
See more about who can get this support – and how to apply – on our site.
Did you know there’s an East Sussex helpline to give free and confidential advice on the benefits you can claim?
You can call on 0333 344 0681 between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday.Or email benefitseastsussex@harcuk.com
There’s more about benefits - including for sickness, disability, family situations and universal credit – on our site.
Our free Warm Home Check service offers advice and support to anyone struggling to stay warm at home.
If you are on a low income you may also qualify for a free home visit to assess how to keep the property warm. This could include help with things such as repairs to heating and boilers or even home upgrades in some cases

Community groups across East Sussex offer ways for residents in need to get emergency food supplies.
This can be from:
- Food banks (which tend to be free)
- Community supermarkets - usually membership schemes which offer low-cost food
- Community fridges - where surplus food can be shared with neighbours
We have jobs on offer in almost every part of the county, and in a wide range of roles.
Working for East Sussex County Council guarantees you’ll be part of a supportive team and make a real difference in your community.
