Many Ukrainians coming to the UK will wish to work while they are here. With 3-year visas, they have the right to work as soon as they arrive in the UK.
East Sussex County Council have a funded project called Moving on Up, which is part of ESTAR. This aims to support people into training and work. The Moving On Up project can support Ukrainians in the following ways:
- Applicants will receive mentor support and are offered free training to develop skills they may need.
-
Moving on Up offers matching to a job with training or an apprenticeship and help with interviews.
- Moving on up is a great project that gives advice and guidance to help you understand which career path and jobs you may wish to pursue in the UK.
- After securing a job you'll be eligible for up to a £3,000 free bursary. This can be used to secure private accommodation or furniture and goods for accommodation.
If you think this would be of interest to your guest, they can find out more below and email 📩 movingonup@sussexcommunity.org.uk to start their application.
We've recently updated our website with new guidance and information on childcare for Ukrainian guests. They will now be able to find information on childcare options, possible funding and how to apply.
The 2021-2022 school year finishes in East Sussex schools on 21 July 2022 and schools will not re-open until 1 September 2022.
This means that, although you can apply for a school place during this period using the online portal, we may not be able to offer your guests' child a place until we are able to contact schools again in September. The process takes up to fifteen school days, so you may not hear about a school place for your guests' child before 22 September 2022.
Telephone lines in schools and East Sussex admissions can be very busy during early September but be assured that everyone will work hard to ensure that all children are offered an appropriate school place as quickly as possible.
Your guest(s) can claim benefits immediately if they have arrived through the Homes for Ukraine scheme. If they've not already done so, it is important that they apply for Universal Credit as soon as possible. This will provide them with a regular income until they are able to find work in the UK.

Recently we gifted a free laptop to all Ukrainian families in East Sussex. If your guest has recently arrived or are yet to receive their laptop, please email us at 📩 ukraine@eastsussex.gov.uk and we will send one out to them.
Please remember that we ask all hosts to update our online form twice only.
First - When you give us details of everyone aged 16 or over in your household so we can carry out safety checks
Second - please use the form to tell us when your guests arrive. This will help us speed up payments and services that are due.
You only need to do each of these steps once. If you've already updated the form, you do not need to do it again - thank you.
This newsletter is sent to every host (sponsor) in East Sussex who is part of Homes for Ukraine to keep you updated. You can unsubscribe at any time.
We expect to send you a further update next week. Until then, we'd like to wish you all an enjoyable weekend.
