With the weather warming up, the birds singing, and the daffodils blooming, there’s a host of activities and events in East Sussex promising family fun during April. It’s not all bunnies and eggs, though, and as well as some egg hunts we’ve got birds, vintage and military vehicles, horse racing, fun with chemistry and even panto!
While we all know how important it is to keep our families healthy and to provide our children with nutritious meals, it’s not always an affordable option. Often, opting for healthier alternatives means an eye watering amount when you reach the till. We’ve put together our favourite ‘frugal’ hacks and tips to keep your family healthy on an affordable budget.
Community Garden Week runs from 4th to 10th April and is a chance to celebrate community horticultural spaces that all have the same unique mission – to bring people together using the power of nature. We’ve dug out some of the local projects, so why not get involved?
Are you looking for a way to meet new people? To be more involved in your local community? Perhaps you have skills that you want to share with others. If so, our local library is looking for people just like you! Start a new chapter as a volunteer.
Improving skills and careers in East Sussex
East Sussex County Council has signed an agreement to work closely with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to improve the employment opportunities and skills of local residents. Agreed areas for partnership working include developing and promoting the Careers East Sussex web platform, supporting Youth Hubs for young people and working with the council’s Employability for Supported and Temporary Accommodation and Refuges (ESTAR) programme to assist some of the county’s most vulnerable residents. Read more about the partnership here.
New app will help residents prepare for future
A new app is being developed to help people in East Sussex lead a full and healthy life in older age. The Life Transition app will help residents better prepare for significant changes in later life such as retirement, moving home, changes in health and mobility, becoming a carer or experiencing bereavement. Find out more about the project here.
Reading initiative launched for children
A new remote reading programme has been launched to support struggling young readers across the county. Five-to-seven year olds are receiving weekly online reading sessions as part of the UK-wide TutorMate programme, which is run by the charity Innovations for Learning UK.
