Today is Carers' Rights Day and it's all about raising awareness for unpaid carers, and making them aware of the support and help they are entitled to. If you're looking after a family member, partner, friend or neighbour who couldn’t manage without your help, then today is all about you!
Today also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. A global initiative, seeking action to end violence against women and girls around the world. The 16 days run from 25 November to 10 December and we’re showing our support with events to get involved with across the county.
We will use a staggering 189 million batteries over Christmas. However, when it comes to recycling them, around a quarter of us are wrongly putting batteries in our household bins - and this can have explosive consequences!
Batteries cannot be placed in either your waste or recycling bin at home, as they can easily be damaged and start to burn.
This year there have been several serious fires at waste sites in East Sussex which were caused by batteries. Please help us to stop fires by recycling your batteries responsibly!
Can you bring a story to life? Are you good at picking books for other people? Are you confident with computers? Or can you provide a warm welcome at libraries? If you said yes to any of those, then you could help! We have a volunteering role at libraries to suit everyone.
Our volunteering roles in libraries are a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and give something back to your community. Plus, training and support will be provided.
Although celebrations and events for Older People’s Day came to a close last month, the help and support for older people doesn’t stop there. Here, we take look at some of the useful services that are available from East Sussex County Council’s adult social care team all year round.
Almost £4m extra winter help for East Sussex households
Residents struggling to feed themselves, heat their homes or pay water bills may qualify for extra financial help this winter. The Government’s Household Support Fund has allocated £3.9 million to East Sussex to help ease the pressures on hardest-hit residents between November and March. Find out if you qualify.
Extra investment in roads and climate change
Council leaders have agreed to invest millions of pounds in tackling climate change and improving the county’s roads and pavements. A total of £5.8million will be spent on improving road signs, lines and pavements and carrying out road patching across the county, while £3.05million will support the authority’s efforts to cut its carbon emissions. Tackling period poverty is now even easier!
Donated period products have been accepted at libraries across the county since July and, from last month, residents have also been able to donate virtually through a new online wish list. Find out more about period poverty and the scheme here.
Highways team is ready for winter
A fleet of gritters has been primed and is ready to roll into action to keep the county’s roads clear this winter. With 10,000 tonnes of salt stored for the season and 23 gritters and 42 drivers on standby 24/7, East Sussex Highways is ready to react.
