The month of November has a focus on men’s health. To mark this ‘Movember’ we are highlighting our Reading Well collections.
Libraries have self-help books, poetry and fiction for people who are finding it difficult to cope or need advice on a specific emotional or mental health problems.
Have you got a question, but don’t really want to ask? Libraries have the answer, from bankruptcy, anxiety to resilience we’ve got lots of nonfiction to help with tough topics.
Remember, as winter draws in, our Libraries are open back to our usual opening hours. Libraries are warm and welcoming, there’s always a place to study or sit and read.
BookTrust Storytime is an exciting new library experience for families with young children. There are 6 shortlisted titles for the BookTrust Storytime Prize and families are encouraged to read the stories together.
You are invited to take part through your local library where you’ll find free activities, be able to borrow or reserve the shorted listed books and have an opportunity to vote for your favourite.
To celebrate Men’s Health Month our bookclub choice is Matt Haig’s The Humans.
A funny, sad, compulsively readable novel about depression, alien abduction, mathematics, and that most interesting subject of all: ourselves. Combine Douglas Adams’s irreverent take on life, the universe, and everything with a genuinely moving love story, and you have some idea of the humour, originality, and poignancy The Humans.
Writer and mental health campaigner Matt Haig believes we should be frank, unashamed, and comfortable talking about the way we feel.
“There is this idea that you either read to escape or you read to find yourself.”
Newhaven Library is starting a new Homework and Activity Club on Tuesday afternoons for primary aged children (5-11 years.) Children and families will get support to complete their homework from our trained volunteers. There is a fun activity at the end of each session, including Lego challenges, coding games, craft and more.
There is no need to book, although spaces are still limited.
More clubs will be starting at Eastbourne, Hastings and Uckfield in the near future. If you would like to get involved and volunteer at one of our clubs, please get in touch.
This month's quote is from Selected short stories of the supernatural by Margaret Oliphant.
