HOSC reviews proposed redesign of inpatient mental health in East Sussex

HOSC has begun its review of the proposals to relocate and reprovide inpatient mental health services in East Sussex.

The proposals by the East Sussex NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) in partnership with the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT) involve moving the 36 Working Age Adult and 18 Older Adult inpatient mental health beds from the Department of Psychiatry at Eastbourne District General Hospital to one of two new sites in either Bexhill-on-Sea or Hailsham.

HOSC considered the proposals to be a substantial variation to services requiring the CCG to formally consult with the Committee under health legislation. The Committee set up a review board to carry out the review. You can read the full discussion in the minutes of the 10th June HOSC meeting.

The HOSC review board has begun gathering evidence about the proposals and is keen to hear the views of residents. If you wish to submit any comments or evidence to HOSC, you may do so using the link at the bottom of the article. Please submit any comments by Wednesday 8th September.

The HOSC review is separate to the NHS public consultation which is currently underway and runs for 12 weeks. You can fill out the CCG's public consultation document on their website.

At its next public meeting on 23rd September, the HOSC will agree a report to submit to the CCG before it makes its decision. The HOSC will then consider whether the CCG’s decision is in the best interest of health services at its following meeting on 2nd December 2021.

HOSC to consider performance of urgent care in East Sussex

The HOSC will consider an update on urgent care services in East Sussex at its next meeting on 23rd September.

Urgent care services are healthcare services that provide the diagnosis and treatment of non-emergency, minor injuries or illnesses that ideally need to be seen on the same day, such as strains and sprains, ear and throat infections and feverish illnesses.

NHS England has required local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to develop a new integrated urgent care system in their local area comprising primarily of Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs); an enhanced NHS 111 service; and evening and weekend GP appointments.

This new integrated urgent care system is now largely in place in East Sussex, so the HOSC has requested a report providing an update on how it is performing.

The report will cover several topics including an update on the progress of the closure of the Eastbourne Station Health Centre and the new urgent care services available to Eastbourne residents; and the performance of the new NHS 111 Clinical Assessment Service (CAS).
