July 2019

To your library and beyond!

summer reading challenge logo

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge blasts off on 13 July and the theme is Space Chase; an out-of-this-world adventure celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.  Help our super space family, the Rockets, on a special mission - and have tons of fun along the way!

Every year, thousands of children in East Sussex take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Sign up for the Challenge and come along to the library to receive a special Reader Record to keep a list of your books.

To take part children need their own library card, but don't worry if they don't have one already - they can get one from their local library or apply online. If your child isn’t reading on their own yet they can still take part by sharing books with you. It’s fun and totally free!

To complete the challenge:

  • Read at least six library books – they can be any book and in any format!
  • Collect a special mission folder, stickers and rewards for each book read
  • Receive a certificate and medal when you finish. Children can have their certificate presented in school

Children's Book Award winner announced!

authors with flowers at the east sussex childrens' book award

On Tuesday 11 June 150 children from across East Sussex attended our very special final event of the 2019 East Sussex Children's Book Award at the Royal Hippodrome Theatre in Eastbourne, to hear the announcement of the winning book.

This year's prize went to Sharon Tregenza for her book The Jewelled Jaguar, an adventure story about a cursed Aztec knife, which had readers guessing till the end.

All five of the shortlisted books were celebrated at the event with prizes awarded to winning competition entries and children giving fantastic performances on each of the books.

Sharon Tregenza was joined on stage by two of her fellow shortlisted authors, Ally Sherrick and Sharon Cohen, who took part in a live Q&A session before Sharon was presented with her award.

Thank you to all the authors, library staff and schools who have taken part in the Book Award this year.  It has been a fantastic celebration of reading and children's literature.

We will soon be reading for next year's Award so look out in the autumn for news of 2020!

A book I have loved...

Jewelled Jaguar by Sharon Tregenza

This month we share a prize winning book review by pupil Emily from our East Sussex Children's Book Award on the winning title, The Jewelled Jaguar by Sharon Tregenza.

"The Jewelled Jaguar is a story about a young boy named Griffin whose mother gets swallowed by a giant hole that randomly opens up in the ground. He has to move in with his aunt and uncle and cousin, Cinnamon (who doesn't like him very much).

Together, they try to discover the reason why his mother got swallowed up in the first place. They think it has something to do with the mysterious Aztec knife that she had found a few days before...

My favourite character was Cinnamon, I like her because she was probably one of the coolest characters in the story with her purple hair and pet rat 'Ruby Ruby'. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and adventure."

Reserve your copy from an East Sussex Library or download the eBook now.
