Words for wellbeing

Writing outside

Mental Health Awareness week takes place from 13th - 19th May, and to celebrate libraries across the county will be displaying books to support positive mental health and boost your wellbeing.

With this year's focus on having a positive body image we will be focusing on resources to get you feeling happy in your skin.

"You may view me as a freak, tell me I am an outcast because my locks don’t reach my hips. I don’t view hair that way.  My hair is just my hair, it is not me"

These powerful words about body image were written by a young person who attended a creative writing course with East Sussex Libraries last year. For more information and resources to support teen mental health, including a creative writing booklet with more examples from the course as well as exercises to try at home, reserve one of our Teen Wellbeing Bags for free or check out our Diary of Events below.

New look for Lewes Library

Children's area Lewes library

It's hard to believe it has been almost 15 years since Lewes Library opened to the public in its new home in the town, and it was certainly in need of a bit of TLC.  We've redecorated, fitted new carpets and replaced the old lighting with up-to-date LED lights, which makes for a better, brighter environment and saves money and electricity.

We've updated the layout of the library too, with improved study space for children and young people on the mezzanine floor, a new look young adult area and a great, larger new children’s area.

Join us on Saturday 18th May at 11am to explore the library and enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Our Library Assistants will be happy to show you around our new look library and one of our Librarians will be giving a special free Rhyme Time for babies, toddlers and their parents or carers at 11.30am.

If you have any questions about Lewes Library please feel free to contact us via our website or by phone on 0345 60 80 196 or speak to a member of staff when visiting the library.

Share a story

Man reading with child

May is National Share a Story Month and there is no place better than your local library to get started. Whether you are sharing a story with a child, talking about your latest read with a book group, or even raving to your work colleagues about the book you just can't put down, your local library and eLlibrary have plenty of titles to get you started.

We will be sharing some of our favourite children's stories this month on our Facebook page and for a further look at the benefits of reading to children, as well as some top tips, the Your East Sussex website currently features an interview with one of our Librarians on sharing stories.

A book I have loved...

Two boys kissing cover

This month, Librarian Michele reviews 'Two Boys Kissing' by David Levithan

"Love is so painful, how could you ever wish it on anybody? And Love is so essential, how could you ever stand in its way?"

This is about love, relationships and prejudice.

The relationships of young gay adults play out against the backdrop of two boys trying to break the record for the world's longest kiss, with the ghosts of past gay men who have suffered and died from AIDS following the lives of this new generation of gay men - ghosts who have another perspective of being gay from the characters in the novel, but who also have hope for future generations. And it is the tragedy of these past generations of men that drives home the fact that, although society is by no means prejudice-free, it was far harder in decades past.

In this book David Levithan addresses the issues that young gay men have faced in the past, and those they still face, but overall it has a positive message - embrace who you are.

Reserve your copy from East Sussex Libraries now.
