Amazing Futures for 14-25 year olds

Teenagers

Amazing Futures is a new project hosted by local charity Amaze to support 14-25 year olds with SEND during their transition to adulthood. The project begins with three launch sessions, starting on Thursday 29 November, 5 to 7.30pm, at the DC3 Project Space in Eastbourne.

These sessions have been designed by young people with SEND to help other young people develop new social networks and connections within their community, and grow their knowledge, confidence and life skills to improve their future options.

Amaze are also recruiting 18-25 year olds to become Amazing Futures volunteer peer supporters. Supporters will assist young people with SEND to identify and work towards the goals they want to achieve during the project. Training is free and volunteers will learn lots of new skills.

Claire Piper, Amazing Futures Coordinator for East Sussex says, "It’s been great to see how the Amazing Futures groups in Brighton & Hove run and just how much young people are responsible for planning what happens and the difference this is making to their lives. I can’t wait to get to work with young people with SEND across East Sussex to develop their Amazing Futures."

If you, or someone you know, would like to take part in Amazing Futures or volunteer as a supporter, please contact Claire on 07484 915038 or email claire@amazesussex.org.uk

Members of the Amaze team are also hosting a stall at the Eastbourne Arndale Centre on Thursday 29 November, selling tickets for their ever popular 'Win a Car' charity event. Come along and say hello to Claire and the rest of the team - their stall will be based near Topshop.

Enabling resilience in East Sussex schools

On Thursday 15 November, East Sussex SENCos, Inclusion Managers and other professionals who support children with SEND attended an Inclusion Conference at the Amex Stadium.

This year's theme was 'Resilient Communities' and attendees took part in a range of workshops designed to help them better support children, young people and themselves to be more resilient. They also heard neuroscientist Dr. Jack Lewis (pictured) speak about how optimisation and neuroplasticity can help develop the working brain.

We'd like to thank all attendees and speakers for making the event such a great success.

Support for home educators

All electively home educating families and families considering home educating are welcome at our monthly drop-ins that take place across the county. Families can attend anonymously or as an alternative to a home visit from one of our team members. A list of all upcoming sessions is available on the ISEND Facebook page.

At the drop-ins we offer advice, guidance and a friendly ear. We have arranged for a member of the school nursing team to attend the drop-ins for any health enquiries home educating families may have, including vaccinations, milestones and mental health needs.

No need to book, just turn up.

Work experience for home educated students

work experience

Applications are invited from home educated Year 11 students for an exciting opportunity to take part in one week of work experience in 2019.

Placements will be with a local employer in which a young person carries out a range of tasks in much the same way as an employee, with the emphasis on learning from the experience. Work experience provides opportunities for learning about the skills, behaviours, careers, roles and structures that exist within a workplace. Successful candidates will meet with a member of the ESCC Work Experience Team to discuss the types of placements available, the process for securing the right match and the preparation required to get the most out of the placement.

If you, or someone you know, is interested, please email workexperience@eastsussex.gov.uk to request an application form - the deadline for applications is Friday 21 December.
