Stand up for East Sussex

Stand up for East Sussex

We’re urging people in East Sussex to stand up for their county by calling on the Government to give them a fairer deal.

We’ve launched the ‘Stand Up For East Sussex’ campaign and we’re asking residents to sign a petition to the Prime Minister which calls for an urgent rethink on the resources the county receives.

The county has a high and fast-growing elderly population, wages below the national average, few large firms to boost its business rates and a transport network which often lets residents down. Yet savings of £112 million have been made from services in East Sussex since the start of the decade – enough to meet the yearly costs of caring for 5,600 vulnerable people, or to repair 2 million potholes.

Please show your support and sign the petition

Have you had your flu jab?

Flu patient

The UK is braced for a heavy outbreak of flu this autumn and winter. The Southern Hemisphere (where winter has just ended) is coming out of a severe flu season, which may be on its way here now.

Your GP (and a local pharmacy if you’re 18 and over) will give a free flu vaccination to everyone aged 65 years and over, pregnant women, two and three year olds (children aged four to eight will receive it in school), carers, people with long term health conditions and people who are very overweight (BMI of 40+). If you are in one of these groups, don’t delay – get the free flu jab today.

More information about flu is available online at NHS Choices - Flu

The future of our library service - have your say

Books

Residents are being encouraged to take part in a consultation on proposals which will create a modern and sustainable library service for the county.

The proposals, which would save the authority £653,000, include:

  • closing seven of the current 24 library buildings and no longer providing a mobile library service, and
  • closer working with other council departments to provide additional support through outreach work in those areas of the county where there is the greatest need.

The libraries that would close under the proposals are Langney, Mayfield, Ore, Pevensey Bay, Polegate, Ringmer and Willingdon.
