Toby's journey to success

Toby at work

To the enormous pride of his family, a young man from Kingston, near Lewes has successfully completed an internship and started his first full-time paid job.

Toby Sedar, who at three-years old could not walk and had global developmental delay, is now a post porter franking and delivering mail at the District General Hospital (DGH) in Eastbourne.

He said, “It feels great to be working and earning good money.”

Before landing the job Toby worked in the hospital as an intern for a year with Project Search, a programme helping people with learning disabilities into work.

Toby learned to work in a team and faced challenges along the way. He said, “I found laundry difficult because I was warm and it was very hard work.”

After the laundry and café, working in the post department was Toby’s last and favourite rotation at the hospital, so when a job there was advertised he went for it.

He worked as bank staff to see how he coped with full time hours and traveling to work by train. Project Search helped him apply and prepare for interview and on the day his hard work paid off.

Sounds Fun! - Kids' sound therapy

Musical instruments

Sound therapy helps kids develop their communication, listening and social skills, build confidence and wellbeing.

Sophie Harvey, a qualified Sound Therapist, runs Sonic Surfers, a group where 7 to 13-year-olds enjoy interactive sound games using percussion and their voices.

The Surfers get the chance to express and be themselves in a fun and creative way. A ‘magical soundbath’ finishes the session to help wash away worries and encourage a good night's sleep!

Surfers can practise many of the exercises at home for continued benefit.

Sophie adapts the sessions for the needs of the children present. Sessions are term-time Tuesdays 6.30 -7.30pm, at the Dance Studio in Ringmer Community College.

First session is free then fees are currently discounted at £5 per session (£8 for two siblings), payable half-termly in advance.

To find out more, contact Sophie on 07976 835269 / sophie@sonicsanctuary.co.uk or visit www.SonicSanctuary.co.uk
