Road improvements worth £600,000 due to begin in Beverley
 The council is to invest £600,000 in a programme of road surfacing at seven locations across Beverley, with most of the work being carried out during evening times.
The works are due to start on Monday 3 August and are scheduled to take around nine weeks to complete, depending on the weather.
New impact report highlights business and tourism achievements across East Yorkshire
 The council has published its 2025-26 Impact Report, which shows how Invest East Yorkshire and Visit East Yorkshire have supported over 1,100 businesses, including £52 million in contracts secured.
Invest East Yorkshire’s business centres have also obtained a 94% occupancy rate, while providing 214 enterprises with in-depth ongoing support.

Of the four levels available C1-C4 East Riding achieved the second from top, C2. This follows a two-day on-site inspection in April 2026, the first time the council has been inspected under this new framework.
The team of inspectors were assessing the council across all four of the consumer standards, Neighbourhood and Community Standard, Safety and Quality Standard, Tenancy Standard, and the Transparency, Influence and Accountability Standard.
East Riding Libraries appoint new Poet Laureate
 East Riding Libraries are delighted to announce that Charlotte Oliver has been appointed as the next East Riding Poet Laureate.
Following a competitive selection process, Charlotte was chosen by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s library team for her wealth of experience, strong community engagement skills and clear commitment to making poetry welcoming, relevant and accessible for everyone.
Free and discounted bus travel for young people this summer
 If you're travelling across the East Riding and Hull this summer with children you may benefit from free bus travel for children, with the region’s two bus operators both signing up to the Government’s ‘Great British Summer Savings Scheme’.
The Mayor has also gone a step further and funded a 50% discount on travel for 16–19-year-olds on services provided by Stagecoach East Midlands and East Yorkshire Buses.
Between Saturday 1 and Monday 31 August 2026, every child aged five to 15, boarding a bus in East Yorkshire, will travel for free, while anyone aged 16-to-19 will travel at half price by simply asking for a ‘Mayor’s Fares’ ticket.
Online safety resources available as school holidays begin
East Riding’s Safeguarding Children Partnership (ERSCP) is raising awareness of how parents can help keep children safe online.
ERSCP has webpages with information for parents and carers to help them address potential dangers online. Skips Safety Net is another resource that provides advice about things like social media, sharing pictures, gaming, live streaming, grooming, fake news and privacy settings.
The information has been endorsed by the Home Office and is available online, or in workbooks which can be ordered through the website.
