It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael Wood, the East Riding Town Crier.
Michael has been the town crier for East Riding of Yorkshire Council since 1997 when he won the ceremonial role in a competition.
Since then he has become a familiar face at events across the East Riding in his green and gold robes and tricorn hat, attending council meetings, agricultural shows, open days and celebrations.
Councillor Linda Johnson, chairman of the council said: “Michael has been a tremendous town crier and has become synonymous with the East Riding. He opened and attended so many events and was always enthusiastic and smiling. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

Secondary pupils benefit from innovative health education through interactive theatre
Pupils in East Riding secondary schools have benefited from live theatre to bring to life learning about physical and emotional health.
'One of My Friends' uses live theatre and discussion to bring to life learning about physical and emotional health with Key Stage 3 pupils. The performance, and discussion, provide Year 7 and 8 pupils with tools to consider the elements that influence their feelings and emotional health. Pupils listen to a series of characters telling their stories about the challenges they are facing.
Slight delay to Weel bridge improvements
The project has been delayed by around four weeks, due to engineers discovering crucial new issues within the aluminium structure, which have been caused by corrosion over the years.
Extra repairs and safety checks are now needed, delaying the project by around four weeks. The bridge is now due to return and reopen to the public in August, rather than in July as originally scheduled.
Headteachers conference focuses on strengthening inclusion
Headteachers, senior leaders and governors from East Riding’s primary and secondary schools joined with a united purpose to strengthen inclusion across schools. Each year the Headteachers conference provides an opportunity for senior leaders to take time out to focus on a topic, to reflect and improve education for children.
This year’s theme was strengthening inclusion so that every child can achieve and thrive.
Watch out for rogue traders
Doorstep crime and rogue trading can have a significant impact on residents, particularly older and more vulnerable people.
