May update for the Local Area SEND Reform Planℹ️
The East Riding SEND Reform Plan has now been shared with the Department for Education (DfE) for feedback and suggestions for improvement.
The plan is about making SEND support better for children, young people and families over the next three years. Schools, health services, local teams and parent carers have all helped shape the ideas in the plan.
The plan aims to:
- help children get support earlier
- improve support in mainstream schools
- make it easier to get specialist help
- help services work better together
Some example improvements from the plan include:
- new specialist support teams for schools
- more support for children in local schools
- extra training for staff
- better support when children move between schools or services
The final plan will be sent to the DfE in June 2026.
We will be setting up sessions for families to hear more about the plans, ask questions and share their views. Families can check the East Riding Parent Carer forum (PCF) website for future meetings and updates.
Families will continue to play an important part in helping improve SEND support across East Riding.

Reasonable adjustments in schools ✅
Schools and other organisations, including schools, have a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments. Reasonable adjustments are changes made to help someone with a disability.
The duty to make reasonable adjustments requires schools to take positive steps to ensure that disabled pupils can fully participate in the education provided and enjoy the other benefits, facilities and services the school offers. This duty covers all aspects of school life, including lunch times, school clubs and trips.
The duty is anticipatory, which means schools should think ahead about what changes may need to be made to support a disabled child.
Examples of reasonable adjustments include printing resources in a larger font for a child with a visual impairment, adapting a uniform policy for a child with sensory needs, and providing adjustments for exams and assessments where needed.
If parents or carers have concerns that reasonable adjustments are not in place, the first step is to discuss this with the school.
