Queen Elizabeth Trust launched to strengthen communities across the United Kingdom
A new UK-wide independent charity, the Queen Elizabeth Trust, has been established on the occasion of the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth to honour her lifelong commitment to public service.
The Government is providing a one-off £40 million endowment as the initial funding needed to support local projects of public value and will act as a catalyst for future fundraising.
Local projects could include the development and transformation of underused buildings and green spaces as well as neighbourhood hubs in communities across the UK. Funding will also help communities ensure they have access to the skills and training they require to deliver local events.
Further information on the funding criteria will be shared in the coming months.
Tree production grants reopen for applications
2 grants supporting the domestic production of trees and planting stock are now open for new applications.
Up to £6.5 million will be made available to researchers, nurseries and seed suppliers to strengthen England’s tree production sector – helping to meet the government’s tree planting targets while supporting green jobs and economic growth.
The funding will help ensure the country can grow treescapes that are resilient to climate change, pests and diseases, and that domestic supply is equipped to keep pace with demand.
Tree Production Capital Grant
Up to £3.5 million will be available over the next 2 years to help nurseries and suppliers invest in the facilities, equipment and technology needed to modernise and strengthen domestic tree production. Eligible capital items include polytunnels, irrigation systems and seed processing equipment.
The deadline for applications is 8 July 2026.
Tree Production Innovation Fund
£3 million will be available over the next 3 years for innovative projects and research that develop new methods to overcome barriers to domestic tree production. Funded projects might explore new propagation techniques, improved growing systems, automation or technology-based solutions that support the future supply of planting stock across England.
The deadline for applications is 29 July 2026.
Write Your Day: Join Mass Observation Diary Day (12 May)
Every year on 12th May, people across the UK are invited to take part in Mass Observation Diary Day—a unique chance to capture the ordinary moments of life and turn them into something extraordinary.
Mass Observation began in 1937 as a pioneering social research project, recording the everyday experiences of people from all walks of life. One of its earliest calls was simple: write down everything you do on 12th May, from waking up to going to bed. That tradition continues today, with the project revived in 1981 and relaunched as a national diary day in 2010. Since then, more than 10,000 diaries have been collected—creating a rich, collective record of daily life in Britain.
This year, there’s a special focus on nature and wellbeing. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a glimpse of greenery from your window, or simply a moment wishing you were outdoors, your reflections matter. How does nature shape your day? How does it affect how you feel? Even if your day is spent at work, school, or indoors, your thoughts and experiences are just as valuable.
Taking part is simple: on 12th May, write about your day in as much detail as you like. There’s no right or wrong way—just be honest, observant, and yourself.
By writing a diary, you’ll be contributing to a living archive that helps future generations understand what everyday life was really like.
