Life-saving defibrillators fitted to all bin lorries
 Thought to be the first scheme of its kind in the UK, we have installed the machines to our entire fleet of refuse trucks in order to help if any medical emergencies occur while the bin crews are out and about on their rounds in the community.
Two of our road safety vehicles have also been fitted with the equipment as they travel across the East Riding.
Speak to recycling officers this Food Waste Action Week
 National Food Waste Action Week is running from Monday 9 to Sunday 15 March and aims to encourage people to make more of their food to help save money, cut down on food waste and therefore help the environment.
The three officers from the recycling team will be holding drop-in sessions in Goole, Withernsea, Pocklington, Hedon, Hornsea, Beverley and Driffield to offer advice and answer questions about recycling food waste and how to make meals go further.
Help shape the future of adult social care at an in-person consultation event
 Over the past few months, the council has been gathering feedback on adult social care services through a ‘Have Your Say’ survey which gave you the chance to share your opinions and influence how services are designed and delivered.
In order to strengthen the response there will be a series of in-person consultation events. The events will take place between Monday, 23 and Friday 27 March in Beverley, Goole, Hornsea, Driffield, Withernsea, Haltemprice and Bridlington.
Members of UK Youth Parliament and first Young Mayor elected
 5,423 young people voted on who they would like to represent them as members of the UK Youth Parliament.
East Riding’s first Young Mayor was appointed through voting Youth Council members. Noureen Absinsanooj, age 12, from South Hunsley School was voted to be the Young Mayor and she will help ensure young people are heard and meaningfully involved in civic and public life.
Sewerby Hall Zoo apprentice wins award in animal care
 Megan Welsh, has been awarded Apprentice of the Year in Animal Care at Bishop Burton College’s 2026 Apprenticeships Awards. Megan, aged 30 from Hull, began her apprenticeship back in October 2023 as a zoo keeper, she immediately got stuck into a wide range of tasks and quickly became a valued member of the team at Sewerby Zoo.
The awards which took place on Thursday, 12 February at Bishop Burton College, seek to acknowledge the hard work of apprentices across the East Riding, shining a light on their great efforts and value within the workplace.
