Celebrating 80 years of the NNEB: A legacy of childcare excellence to learn from
Join Coram Hempsall’s to celebrate 80 years of the NNEB and how this ‘gold’ standard of childcare has shaped today’s practice and how it still needs to influence the future.
On Monday 17 November 2025 we will be hosting a FREE online session from 10.00-12.00 for educators, training providers, local authorities, stakeholders and partners.
The event will discuss the NNEB’s legacy, and consider it in today’s landscape, to inform future opportunities for childcare and early education practice and profile. We will be joined by Jan Dubiel (hey! programme director), Mandy Edmond (Vice Principal of Norland College).
James Hempsall OBE, managing director of Coram Hempsall’s and the event chair says:
“In May 2025, it was 80 years since the establishment of the NNEB, a qualification that shaped generations of nannies, nursery nurses, and childcare practices across the UK and beyond. It NNEB introduced a recognised, standardised route into childcare, whether in professional settings or private homes. It was the first flagship qualification to formally train childcare workers, with a revolutionary focus not only on childcare but child development, play, and learning as pedagogy. The NNEB remains as a respected qualification, indeed it is held in regard as the gold standard by many to this day”.
As we reflect on this revolutionary qualification and its influence over eight decades, we must also look forward. The event will ask what do the next decades hold for childcare education and practice? How can we better build on this legacy to enhance learning and development in our sector, supporting not only high standards but also recruitment, retention, and career progression locally, nationally, and globally?
