Best Start in Life website replaces Childcare Choices website

As part of this government’s commitment to making the lives of parents easier, the new Best Start in Life website has now launched

Best Start in Life replaces the Childcare Choices website as your main source of information for early education and childcare support. It brings together trusted information and tips to help you to support your child grow and develop.

You can still access information and check your eligibility on childcare support, but now with a wider range of resources. These include support for families from pregnancy through to starting school and beyond, a map to check what schools offer free breakfast clubs, and a checker to find your local Best Start Family Hub

Local Offer Roadshow – Where should we visit? 🗺️

We’ve recently launched our new Local Offer website, designed to be easier to navigate and packed with up-to-date information for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), their families and carers.

As we move through the Autumn and Winter terms, we’re planning a series of Local Offer Roadshow drop-in sessions across the East Riding. These informal events will give families the chance to:

Explore the new website
Ask questions and share feedback
Connect with the Local Offer team in person

We’d love to hear your suggestions for places we could visit! Whether it’s a SEND coffee morning, library session, activity group, networking event, or any other gathering where we could set up a stall and chat with families, please do let us know.

As part of our ongoing work to keep the East Riding Local Offer fresh and relevant, we’re updating our directory of local groups and activities that support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

If you run or are part of a group that’s SEND specific, we’d love to hear from you, so we can include it in our updated directory.

By sharing your details, you’ll help families across East Riding discover the support and opportunities available in their communities and ensure your group is visible to those who need it most.

Extra Support for EOTIS/C Learners🎓

We’re pleased to share that work has been ongoing for some time to support the very small number of children and young people in the East Riding who are part of the EOTIS/C group.

EOTIS/C stands for Education Other Than In School/ College. This applies to children whose education is delivered in a different way because it would be inappropriate for their education to be delivered in a setting.

This work has included:

Strengthening policies, procedures, and guidance around EOTIS/C.
Investing in a dedicated EOTIS Coordinator to oversee and support the cohort.

We've also created a one page guide for families of EOTIS/C learners which was recently sent out to families of the EOTIS/C group.

As promised, we're now sharing this update with the wider parent carer community, along with news of our new EOTIS/C Policy, which will be published on the Local Offer shortly.

East Yorkshire Parent Carer Forum Events:

EYPCF - Wills and Trusts Event at Gosschalks Solicitors

Date – 17^th September 2025

Time – 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

Venue – Gosschalks Solicitors, Queens Gardens, Dock Street, Hull, HU1 3DZ

COST – On street parking is available – pay and display, alternatively, there is parking at George Street multistorey carpark, refreshments will be provided.

Notes - This session is for all parents and carers of children and young people (0-25) with SEND. Travel and childcare costs can be reimbursed.

East Yorkshire Parent Carer Forum along with Hull Parent Carer Forum are proud to offer, in association with Gosschalks Solicitors through HEY Smile foundation, a workshop for parents and carers of children and young people with SEND, to inform and support through knowledge and experience an exploration into the world of Wills & Trusts including Legal Power of Attorney.

COST – FREE, parking is available onsite, refreshments will be provided.

Notes - This session is for all parents and carers of children and young people (0-25) with SEND. Travel and childcare costs can be reimbursed.

Please join us for a "Cuppa & Chat" on the 14 of October from 10am - 12pm. We will have representatives from the local authority including the SENDART team.

This is also a chance to meet the members of the EYPCF team and a great opportunity to meet likeminded parents and carers who understand what life is like as a SEND family to share experiences and offer peer to peer support.

EYPCF – Volunteering Opportunities

Are you a parent/carer of a child 0-25 with SEND and want to share your experience and knowledge to help improve lives for families across the East Riding?

Being a volunteer of the Steering Group involves representing the PCF at meetings with the local authority, health, and other external organisations alongside other PCF Steering Group members, attending and helping at EYPCF events, check-in and chats, and workshops around the region.

Clearly time is an important element, our experience shows that those who have children linked into local SEND provision are passionate about getting the best care, not only for their own children, but for others too. So many of the parents who come to us for advice are happy to pass on their own experiences in meetings and in consultations.

Understanding Autism Seminar

Understanding Autism seminar for parents/carers, being run by the Communication and Interaction Specialist Team, to be held from 10am until 12.30pm, in the Cameron Room at Keldmarsh Primary in Beverley, on the 6^th November 2025.

Two tickets per family.

Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) Marketplace Event

Following the success of our PfA event this year, we are excited to invite you to our Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) Marketplace Event on:

Date: Wednesday, 4 February 2026

Location: Mercure Hotel, Grange Park Lane, Willerby, Hull HU10 6EB

Time: 1pm-6:30pm

This event will bring together young people with special educational needs and disabilities, their families, professionals, and service providers to showcase the range of services and opportunities available as they prepare for adulthood.

More details will follow in the coming months.
