Final opportunity to contribute to our SEND and Inclusion Strategy
Since the launch of our Big Listen Consultation in October 2024, we have been gathering feedback on our SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and Inclusion Strategy. We want to give you one last chance to share your thoughts and ensure that the strategy fully reflects the needs and aspirations of children and young people in the East Riding.
A summary of what’s happened so far:
Round 1 (October – January) We launched ‘The Big Listen,’ our SEND and Inclusion Strategy Consultation, on Monday, 14 October 2024. Throughout the consultation, we’ve worked hard to reach as many people as possible, including parents, carers, and local community members, to learn about the issues that matter most. We’ve used a variety of methods to gather views, including local events, meetings with community groups, and an online consultation.
Alongside the online survey, we’ve held co-production events with parents, professionals, and young people with SEND. These sessions have been well attended, with over 100 participants. During our first co-production session, attendees identified six key priorities to be included in the strategy:
Six Priorities Identified:
-
Transitions
-
Culture and Communication
-
Governance
-
Partnerships
-
Timely Support
-
Learning, Development and Impact
-
-
From November 2024 to January 2025, we continued to explore these priorities in further sessions. We’ve also shared local strategies and discussed how we can address these key areas.
The ‘Big Listen’ survey closed on 31 December and received over 600 responses. The top three priorities identified by respondents were:
-
Early identification of needs
-
Strong transitions and preparation for the future
-
Ensuring the right number of settings in the right locations
Comments from respondents highlighted the importance of strengthening support for parents and carers, ensuring adequate funding, early intervention, and joined-up services, as well as providing workforce training.
Voice of Children and Young People We’ve made sure that the voices of children and young people are heard through school visits, including primary, secondary, and specialist settings. This will continue as the strategy develops. If you have a group of children or young people we can visit, please get in touch by emailing localoffer@eastriding.gov.uk
Round 2 (February – April)
Following the co-production sessions in January, we’ve continued to build on the feedback we’ve received. We’ve attended additional events across the county and offered virtual sessions. We’ve also continued visiting schools and groups to ensure that as many voices as possible are heard.
Share Your Views – Make Sure Your Voice Is Heard! We now invite all families, carers, and community members to share any additional thoughts or feedback. Your input will help us ensure that the final strategy reflects the true needs of children and young people in the East Riding.
Please send your comments and ideas to localoffer@eastriding.gov.uk by Friday, 6 June.
We truly appreciate the valuable insights shared so far, and we look forward to finalising a strategy that will make a real difference for SEND and Inclusion in our community.
