Free compost giveaways returns this May
 Residents are encouraged to come along and collect two free bags of compost at eight different giveaways across the East Riding. The waste and recycling team will be handing out 5,000 bags of compost at events held between 3 and 17 May. Residents are invited to drive to their nearest event where the bags of compost will be placed into the boot of their car. The compost is recycled from brown bin waste and is best used as a soil improver.
£3.5m of road improvements to begin in April
 The 13-week programme of road upgrades will commence on Wednesday, 23 April and will see the improvement of 151 sections of road using over 12,000 tonnes of stone chippings to prevent potholes. Disruption to traffic will be kept to a minimum, but drivers are asked to respect the 20mph speed limit, in place to protect both the travelling public and the council’s workforce.
Street lights project praised by transport minister
 Lillian Greenwood MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and Minister for the Future of Roads at the Department for Transport, visited the village of Hayton, near Pocklington, for a guided tour of one of the sites of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s innovative street lights trial. The project aims to cut carbon and save energy in street lights on major roads and has been praised by the transport minister.
Families receive primary school place offers
 On Wednesday, 16 April parents and carers in the East Riding found out which primary school their children will attend in September. The council received 2,800 applications, of these applications 96.3 percent received their first choice, and 98.8 percent got one of their top three preferences. Most children (98.4 percent) will attend a school in the East Riding. Additionally, 158 children from other areas, including 129 from Hull, have been allocated places in East Riding schools.
New public toilets open on Hornsea seafront
 A former council storage building has been transformed into a ladies' and gents' lavatory on the seafront in Hornsea. The facility, located on Sands Lane promenade, includes six women's cubicles, two men’s cubicles and urinals, and an accessible toilet. Construction began in October 2024 and has been completed in time for Easter. The work has been carried out by JP Developers.
