Spotlight On... SENDIASS

East Riding SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service) provides information, advice and support to parents and carers of children or young people (aged 0 – 25) with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) and to children and young people (up to the age of 25) with special educational needs or disabilities.

Our officers cover the East Riding of Yorkshire and offer impartial and confidential advice to support parents, carers, children and young people (up to the age of 25).

The service is free to use and easy to access. We can help children, young people and parents understand and take part in decisions that affect their lives.

This support may include, but is not limited to:

· providing confidential information and support by email, telephone, face-to-face or at parent/carer drop-in sessions · offering accurate, impartial and accessible information, advice and support about matters relating to SEND · supporting throughout the statutory processes and assessments in relation to Education, Health and Care plans (EHC plans)

· listening to your concerns and helping you to voice and contribute your views, feelings and wishes at all stages.

Share your views and experiences of the SEND provision

We’ve had an impressive response so far with our Big Listen consultation which aims to understand how families could be better supported around Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision.

As we develop our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Inclusion strategy, we want to hear from you! Whether you are a young person, child, parent, carer, family member, professional, or member of the public, we want to hear from you and what you feel are the most important things we need to develop, what’s working well and what your priorities are.

If you have a few spare minutes, we would be really grateful if you could complete the consultation before Tuesday, 31 December. Your views will help shape the new strategy over the next five years.

This Christmas holidays, there is a host of free, fun and festive activities for children and young people across the East Riding. Sessions include Wicked themed dance workshops, art and craft sessions, sports camp as well as outdoor adventure, farm experiences and Christmas parties.

The activities are all part of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which is funded nationally, and is primarily aimed at those aged between five and 16, and who are in receipt of benefits-related free school meals.

All activities are inclusive, with some SEND specific sessions available, such as UV glow sports, low ropes and bouldering. A limited number of places are also available to children and young people who have an education, health and care plan (EHCP), regardless of their free school meals status.

The majority of sessions are four hours long and each child and young person can book up to 4 sessions for free in the Christmas holidays, subject to availability. Places are booked on a first come, first served basis.

EYPCF – Check-in & Chat, Beverley

Please join us for our regular Check-in & Chat event. Representatives from the local authority will be joining us along with people from health, and social care.

This is also a chance to meet the members of the EYPCF team and a great opportunity to meet likeminded parents and carers who understand what life is like as a SEND family to share experiences and offer peer to peer support.

Please join us at Beverley Enterprise Centre for our first evening workshop of 2025, which will be covering all aspects of need identification and assessment.

This workshop is being funded by the Joyona Charitable Trust, registered number 1125861 and delivered by Shirley Pethick.

The evening will include:

SEND legal framework & Code of Practice.

Interactive sessions on assessment and identification of need.

Termly support plans and outcomes.

Feel free to bring with you any documentation you have for your child, such as EHCPs and current termly support plans.

Pocklington Arts Centre

Coming up, we have a special relaxed performance of our festive show, Jack Frost’s Christmas Wish, on 15 December at 10.30am. This performance will include BSL interpretation as well as house lights (rather than dark), a relaxed attitude to involuntary sounds and moving around the auditorium during the performance and we will have a quiet break out space available.

Surveys, Consultations and Useful Information

East Riding of Yorkshire Council are hosting a marketplace-style event for young people with SEND aged 13+ and their families to meet the different services, teams and organisations that can support them.

A range of stallholders and workshops will be available to provide advice and support around the transition to adulthood.

The event will take place on Wednesday 5 February 2025, 1pm to 6.30pm at the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel, Willerby.
