New Childminder flexibilities coming in from 1 November
The Department for Education is introducing new flexibilities for childminders from 1 November to help more childminders join and stay in the profession. The new flexibilities will:
- Create a new category of childminder (childminder without domestic premises) who work entirely from non-domestic premises
- Increase, from 3 to 4, the total number of people that can work together under a childminder’s registration (including the childminder)
- Give childminders and providers of childcare on domestic premises (CODPs) more flexibility, allowing them to spend more time operating outside of domestic premises, such as a community hall or school
- Increase the number of people needed for CODPs to operate from 4 or more, to 5 or more people providing care. Note: CODPs that were registered, or applied to register, before 1 November can continue operating with 4 or more people.
The department has published an article on the Foundation Years website to give an overview of the changes and answer main FAQs – see Newsflash – New Flexibilities for Childminders - Foundation Years.

Childcare Works
The Childcare Works HUB is a one-stop shop hosting a wealth of resources to support childcare providers in the expansion of the early years entitlements and implementation of the wraparound programme.
Resources are designed by our specialist team around the themes that you have told us are important, and new content is continually being developed and will be shared as the year progresses.
Knowing what’s available and sharing with the providers you work with can save you time, effort and empower providers to make the most of the childcare expansion.
The attached guide provides details of the resources that are currently available and those that are planned. We encourage you to share this information with your colleagues and providers.
How to use the content
- As a refresher, an update or to support the understanding and confidence of local authority officers.
- You can copy and use the summaries and share the links to recorded content widely in newsletters and direct communications, so providers are able to self-serve, without any local authority input.
- You can link to the content in your guidance for providers, in online information or from your website.
- The recorded content in part or as a whole can be used in direct work with providers at networks, training or 1:1 support as part of a provider support strategy.
You can access the HUB and explore these resources via - HUB for Providers - childcareworks.org.uk.
