We are pleased to announce the bridge is now reopen following a successful repairs project. This is two weeks ahead of schedule.
The work, which began on May 20, included:
- Rebuilding parts of the bridge that were damaged and missing. Rows of large stone bricks on the parapets on both sides of the bridge and in its recesses were replaced with local stone, sourced from Whitby,
- A large cantilever scaffold system was used to move the heavy stones into place,
- Stainless-steel staples were attached to the rebuilt parapets at each level to provide extra strength and flexibility,
- Extensive pointing,
- New warning bollards were sited at either end to prevent vehicles from hitting the bridge,
- Traffic lights at both ends have been replaced by the council with a new, more energy-efficient traffic signal system.
- Street lighting has also been replaced.
We would like to thank residents and road users for bearing with us whilst the project has been carried out.

Now that the work has been completed, the temporary traffic lights at both Buttercrambe and Long Lane onto the A1079 will be removed immediately.
Signs for the diversion routes will now also be removed over the next few days, and the Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be remotely switched off.
The Stamford Bridge Repairs Project Facebook group will remain open until Friday 26 July to allow for any questions related to the repairs project.
