How to do it for East Yorkshire
Our regeneration and funding team has launched a new website where community groups can easily access useful information and resources that can help them deliver activities and develop their organisations.
As part of the “Volunteering Across the East Riding” review panel, members recommended that the council should make web content to demonstrate what a successful grant funding application looks like. They also suggested looking into providing extra assistance to help third parties apply for grants. How to Do it For East Yorkshire is a response to those recommendations, providing a one-stop shop for existing and developing voluntary community groups to access information and put themselves in a better position to secure external funding.

Changes to workplace drug and alcohol testing policy
Our Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy has been updated to make it easier to read and follow the procedure, further, to strengthen the support available to staff who are struggling with a drug or alcohol misuse problem.
The testing procedure can be applied to all workers. As stated within the policy, for cause testing will apply where there is cause to believe that a member of staff’s behaviour or performance at work is impaired by drugs or alcohol. If so, they may be required to undertake the drug and alcohol testing procedure.
If a member of staff discloses that they have a drug or alcohol misuse problem a supportive approach should be taken to assist them in their recovery, but it remains their responsibility to seek help, from external services such as their GP.

New email signatures – update yours now
We are rolling out a new email signature to make all footers consistent across the council.
If you have a council email account, you need to delete your existing footer and add the new one as soon as possible.
You should not change the font, change any graphics, or add extra graphics to the footer.
Our new email signature template is available on the intranet. You can also find a step-by-step guide on how to create and add this to your Microsoft Outlook account.
We are working on a suite of Teams backgrounds that will soon be available. These will help to promote different areas of the business. They will also remove the need for extra graphics in email footers.
If you need further assistance, please speak with your manager.

"The Disabled Staff Network is a supportive, safe space"
We offer a range of support for employees with disabilities - from accessible equipment and flexible working to check-ins with managers. But did you know we also have a Disabled Staff Network (DSN)?
DSN is a safe and confidential space. It provides the opportunity for staff to seek support and share advice. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Rachel, who joined the council earlier this year, has found the network a great source of support…
“Not only is the DSN a great place to highlight accessibility issues, and implement change, it’s a supportive, safe space where we can all be open and honest with each other," says Rachel.

Share your 'little big thing' with colleagues and help to prioritise mental wellbeing
To raise awareness of Stress Awareness Week which ran throughout half term, the council is highlighting free self-help resources, 'Let's Talk Resilience' course and also wider support available to staff through the NHS 'Every Mind Matters' website which aims to help people look after their mental wellbeing and support that of others. Live Well Work Well and public health are supporting the thinking behind the new NHS 'find your little big thing' campaign and asking colleagues to prioritise, encourage, reflect and talk about mental wellbeing.
Stress can affect all of us for all sorts of reasons - not just workload pressures but worries about family or friends, the pressure to juggle work and home and all the extra life admin as well as attempting to be a present partner/parent/friend.
Making time for mental wellbeing is important and embedding little things into your day-to-day routine such as a walk in the park or having a cuppa with someone can help you feel better and more in control.
Please share your 'little big thing' with internalcomms@eastriding.gov.uk as we look to develop our East Riding campaign and share both internally and externally with our partners and residents. Click below to hear from staff sharing their examples.

NHS Targeted Lung Health Check Service begins in East Riding
The NHS Targeted Lung Health Check Service, which is helping to save lives through earlier diagnosis of lung cancer and other conditions, is now being offered to eligible participants living in East Riding.
Former and current smokers, who are aged from 55 to 74 and live in the Withernsea area, have now started to receive their invitations for a lung health check telephone assessment with a specially trained nurse. Those classed as higher risk will then be invited to have a CT scan located at East Riding Leisure Withernsea car park from Wednesday 8 November.
All eligible residents will be invited to take part as the service moves around the region, with Hedon and Hornsea planned for early 2024.

Let's talk 'Movember' for Men's Health Awareness month
Since 2003, Movember has funded thousands of men’s health projects around the world, challenging the statistics, getting people talking, highlighting men’s health research and working to transform the way health services reach and support men.
The charity has taken on three of the biggest health issues affecting men:
-
mental health and suicide prevention
-
prostate cancer
-
testicular cancer.
This month's focus on men's health covers health and wellbeing support for all council staff, links to local support groups and organisations such as HEY Mind, as well as free cancer awareness training for Movember from Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance.
