Exciting plans for the Treasure House
Work is expected to start in September on a £3.3 million scheme at the Treasure House. The site will be transformed to include a new customer service centre, enhanced library facilities, new register office for weddings and landscaped gardens. The Treasure House will be closed whilst work takes place with a new temporary library available for users on Champney Road. East Riding Archives users will be able to make enquiries and request documents remotely. Beverley Art Gallery will continue its work during the closure period by providing online content and “behind the scenes” projects. In the Museum, displays will be changed and new exhibits taken out of storage ready for reopening. Details of the closure date will be available on our website, via social media and in a special East Riding Museums newsletter update.
The Friends of Beverley Art Gallery AGM
Around 30 people attended this year's Friends of Beverley Art Gallery AGM at the Treasure House. There were updates by the Chairman Annie Bourton-Card, gallery curator Hannah Willetts and a fascinating presentation on the subject of What Inspires Art by Dr Kevin Byron. There were some engaging questions and discussions, and lovely refreshments too!
Have you thought of becoming a Friend of Beverley Art Gallery? Join now for exclusive events, openings, talks, excursions, a regular newsletter and a discount in the café! Visit the East Riding Museums website for more information.
 The Wolds Around Me
8 July to 26 August
In spring 2023 over 600 pupils from Yorkshire Wolds primary schools took part in a project called The Wolds Around Me. The children worked with three contemporary artists to produce artworks inspired by the landscape, stories and history of their local areas. An exhibition was held at St Michael and All Angels church in Garton on the Wolds with its beautiful wall paintings. A selection of the work is now on display in the Treasure House Community Space on the ground floor.
Radio Humberside interviews Goole's Jack Ross
Radio Humberside's Amanda White visited Goole Museum this month to record an interview with 99-year-old Goole resident Jack Ross. Born on 27 January 1924 in Edinburgh, Jack moved to Goole in 1942 when he joined the RAF as a flight engineer on Halifax bombers. He served in India and Burma and settled in Goole after meeting his wife. Jack has some amazing stories: he has travelled the world and flown a plane across the Atlantic six times. Jack has agreed to take part in an oral history interview about his life with Goole Museum Curator Alex Ombler. The interview will be recorded, transcribed and stored at the museum for future generations to enjoy.
Beverley Art Gallery goes to the Royal Academy!
We are very excited to announce that Beverley Art Gallery will be showing a retrospective of acclaimed artist David Remfry's work in 2025 curated by Dr Gerardine Mulcahy-Parker. Gerardine and gallery curator Hannah Willetts visited the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in June which is coordinated this year by David himself. They were joined by Caroline Hansbury, Annie Bourton-Card (Chairman of the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery) along with the Chairman and committee members from the Friends of Ferens Art Gallery, Marti, Paul and Martin. Congratulations to David on a spectacular Summer Exhibition this year and we can’t wait for 2025!
New exhibition of photographs at Beverley Guildhall
5 July to 27 October
A new exhibition called Beverley by Kloskk opens at Beverley Guildhall on 5 July. It features many of the stunning photos of Beverley taken by Kloskk Tyrer who is well known to Facebook users as one of the town’s “visual storytellers”. Fiona Jenkinson, curator of the Guildhall, compiled the exhibition as a result of numerous requests from visitors to see more of Kloskk’s photos. Fiona said “Despite the fact that Kloskk was not keen for her name to be used in the exhibition, her reputation will be a key element in drawing people to see it, as she is a regular contributor to Facebook and people love her views of the town”. The Guildhall is at the far end of Register Square and is currently open every Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
Cynthia Ward at the Royal Academy
Congratulations to East Riding artist Cynthia Ward who has had her artwork accepted and displayed at this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London. Earlier this year Cynthia displayed two of self-portraits in Goole Museum's Open Art exhibition. Cynthia is now working on a proposal for a full exhibition of her work at Goole Museum. Well done Cynthia!
The work of the Hesslewood Children’s Trust
The recent Helping Hands exhibition at the Treasure House shared the long history of the Hesslewood Children’s Trust from its early days as an orphanage on Spring Bank in Hull. Today, the Trust supports young people by offering grants to those who are in need or hardship, are under the age of 25 and live in the former county of Humberside or in the district of Gainsborough or Caistor. The Trust gives grants for essential household equipment and also gives grants for education or training. If you or a young person you know want to find out more please email the Trust’s secretary at misslynneb@aol.com
