 Safeguarding Week 2023
Programme of free on-line sessions announced for Safeguarding Week 19 – 23 June 2023
Partners from Safeguarding Adults Boards, Children’s Safeguarding Partnerships, Community Safety Partnerships across North Yorkshire, the City of York Hull and East Riding have come together and developed an extensive programme of learning events, seminars and interactive sessions which all underpin this year’s theme - ‘Safeguarding is everybody’s business’.
Spurred on by the success of Safeguarding Week 2022 the safeguarding partners have worked to extend the range of topics being covered this year. While a number of the sessions are open only to professionals working in the safeguarding sector, the majority of the sessions are also open to the public. The week-long programme of over 40 sessions caters for members of the public who want to learn more about safeguarding.
Covering topics such as modern slavery, sexual health, learning from national reviews, domestic abuse, suicide prevention and much more. The sessions have been designed to stimulate discussion, spark innovation and share best practice. Each session will be delivered by inspirational and motivational speakers, all of whom are experts in their field.
The full programme of events is open for viewing and booking via EventBrite and early registration is recommended to avoid disappointment. You can view and book on to sessions here
All the agencies involved will be sharing information across their social media channels and website in the run up to Safeguarding week and throughout the week. To follow along look for the hashtag #safeguardingweek2023
 Modern Slavery Champions
Modern slavery and human trafficking victims are hidden in plain sight. This is an emerging and expanding issue both nationally and locally.
The Humber Modern Slavery partnership and the East Riding Safeguarding Adult’s Board understand the importance of raising awareness locally to both identify victims and ensure they receive the help and support they require. By improving awareness we hope to make it harder for exploiters to operate. To do this we need modern slavery champions to help improve awareness in the teams, organisations and businesses across the county.
Modern slavery champions will
- Be a point of contact for queries
- Receive and share the quarterly newsletter from Humber Modern Slavery partnership (HMSP)
- Be responsible for cascading information as appropriate (ensuring it is discussed in team meetings etc)
- Encourage team members to complete training appropriate to their roles
- Be a conduit for feeding intelligence into the problem profile via the partnership intelligence form (PIF)
- Report back best practice or new ideas for sharing in the Humber-wide newsletter
Training can be provided and there will be opportunities to attend events at the Wilberforce Institute in Hull. The role should not take up too much time but should help to enhance your knowledge and enable you to feel part of the solution to modern slavery. You will receive regular updates and briefings to help increase your knowledge and receive support when required.
There will be 3 ‘events’ per year for the champions and additional events at the Wilberforce Institute.

East Riding Voluntary Action Services’ Safeguarding Conference
|
East Riding Voluntary Action Services in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Humberside Scouts, would like to invite you to their East Riding Safeguarding Conference on 6th July 2023. The aim of the conference is to bring together the VCSE sector and partners to collaborate, network and raise awareness of a range of safeguarding issues affecting our communities. Throughout the day you will be able to access a variety of workshops, which are focused on a range of different safeguarding issues and concerns. These workshops are roughly 45 minutes in length, informative and interactive. Speakers will also be around for some of the day to answer any questions and to network with.
Register for the event
Please ensure that you book on to all workshops which you wish to attend and ensure that your bookings do not overlap. There will be two different workshops running side by side throughout the day, to ensure that we have sufficient places for all attending and can cover as many essential areas of safeguarding as possible. We kindly request that you limit bookings to two people per organisation, for each workshop. This will ensure that more organisations can be represented. Both individuals attending a workshop, will need to register for their workshop.
Book your workshops here
For the duration of the day, we will be providing a networking market stall area, where you will be able to display information on your group or organisation, and network with others attending. This area will be accessed by all attendees throughout the day, and we hope that this will enable networking and collaborating opportunities. If you would like to reserve a stall in this area, please make sure you complete the relevant Eventbrite booking confirmation so we can allocate adequate space for you. These will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so please ensure that you complete this as soon as possible.
At ERVAS we appreciate and understand that working and supporting individuals and families affected by safeguarding factors can at times be difficult and distressing. We feel that is important that we safeguard both ourselves, and our beneficiaries. In acknowledgement of this, we will have present a number of individuals from local wellbeing services to share with you alternative ways of promoting and managing your own mental and emotional wellbeing, along with some fun activities courtesy of Humberside Scouts. We hope that you will enjoy this.
Key Information for the event:
Parking: There will be ample parking available on site for all who attend. This will be clearly signposted on your arrival.
Lunch: Please ensure that you bring your own lunch to the event as we are unable to provide this. Humberside Scouts has kindly agreed to ensure that refreshments, including tea, coffee and biscuits, are available throughout the day and during workshops, but should you require something more substantial, please feel free to bring this with you. We will be providing a break over the lunch period for you to take your lunch in our allocated networking area, and within the beautiful grounds of the venue.

 Service User Engagement
The East Riding Safeguarding Adults Board is creating a Communication and Service User Engagement Plan which will take into account the views of service users and their representatives and see them as key partners in helping to keep people safe.
The first objective of the ERSAB Strategic Action plan for 2022-25 is to:
Ensure adults who do not have a voice themselves are represented and have appropriate support and the means to express their views ensuring there is good communication between all elements of the board, so that people who use services can have input into decision making.
We intend to provide a range of means to involve people who have experience of the safeguarding process or simply have an interest in the work of the Safeguarding Adults Board.
If you would like to find out more and to be part of a virtual network, which will be a way of keeping in touch about the work of the Safeguarding Adults Board, please email us stating 'Service User Engagement' at ersab@eastriding.gov.uk. Please leave your name and contact email and why you would like to be involved.
