Parent Carer Event 2022 – a summary of feedback received and where to find resources from the day.

We have collected feedback via forms on the day of the event and via an e-mail questionnaire sent afterwards to all booked parent carers and stallholders and summarised the data findings, which will be uploaded onto the new Local Offer web page dedicated to SEND Parent Carer events over the coming few days. The page will also include all the presentations and handouts from the workshops and a list of services who held stalls and their details. Keep your eyes on the News & Events page, where we will share the link to the Parent Carer Events page as soon as it is live. It will also appear in the Care and Support directory and you’ll be able to type “parent carer event” into the search bar to find it.

Overall, feedback about the day was very positive, and we have been grateful to receive some very constructive suggestions on how to move forward with future events to ensure they are accessible, useful, and enjoyable for all. The consensus was that our parent carers hugely appreciated the opportunity to be face-to-face with others in similar situations to themselves, as well as with a range of important service providers. This event had not run for 3 years prior due to the pandemic, so it has been a very valuable experience to run it again and find out whether the old format is still suitable for current needs and wishes.

What is the East Yorskhire Parent Carer Forum

We are a registered charity, part of a national network and our aim is to represent the views of parents and carers with children and young people (0-25years) who have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) throughout the East Riding of Yorkshire.

We believe that by working together we have more strength to raise awareness of our children's needs by improving local services for families who care for children and young people with SEND.

We work in co-production with a variety of organisations and work closely with representees who feedback views within the Education, Health and Social Care sector.

What we do

We listen to all parents and carers views and ensure that they are heard and represented.  We organise and host regular forum meetings and training workshops.  We arrange informal events which gives an opportunity for parents and carers to network and share their own experiences and meet like-minded parents and carers who understand what life is like as a SEND family.

Most importantly we help parent and carers grow their knowledge of the SEND system and make sure they are up to date with any relevant information as we believe that this is vital for all parents and carers of children and young people with SEND.

Membership is open to any parent or carer living in East Yorkshire with a child or young person aged between 0 and 25 with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

Members receive frequent updates and information. Members also have the opportunity to attend free events, training sessions and give feedback.

Go Kids Go – Wheelchair Skills Training

About: The workshop is suitable for young wheelchair users from 2-18 years of age.  On the workshop they teach skills such as coping with slopes and rough ground, back wheel balancing, road safety and emergency evacuation techniques. They can work with manual or powered wheelchair users. Games are also played like wheelchair basketball and try out wheelchair dance. They bring extra chairs so mums, dads and siblings can get involved and join in the games. Whilst the objectives are serious the workshops are good fun! They often have a mixed range of abilities and find that everyone gains some new skills from the workshops

SEND Preparing for Adulthood Guide

Open invitation to take part in one of the upcoming Transition Timeline Workshops.

We are currently asking people’s availability for each of the following dates and times:

• Thursday 1 December, 10am to 12pm or 1pm to 3pm
• Friday 2December, 10am to 12pm or 1pm to 3pm
• Thursday 8 December 10am to 12pm or 1pm to 3pm.

(each session will follow the same format and will cover the same discussion points. You only need to attend one session)

Ahead of the Workshops, please take time over a hot drink of your choice to have a look through the Transition Timeline (PowerPoint 1.5mb).

Any questions are fair, as are any suggestions about the format or the design. Please make a note these before the session and have them to hand during the meeting.

Each session is intended to be a 90 minute virtual meeting consisting of two parts:

Part 1: asking for your thoughts on the draft Transition Timeline (attached). Part 2: a broader discussion that aims to categorise needs, concerns and issues that might fall outside of the remit of the transition timeline.

NEW – SENsory Storytime

Explore books, games and crafts in a sensory friendly setting. Our new SENsory storytime sessions are designed for children aged 3-8 who may struggle to sit through our other storytime sessions.
