Beverley's What's on event took place on Sunday 26th June 2022 at East Riding Leisure Beverley and was a joint initiative with Ivan Ushers family and East Riding Leisure Beverley.
The day proved to be a huge success and attracted around 1100 people. Over 250 people took part in the 13 taster activities offered from Chair Based Exercise to Nordic Walking, Basketball to Athletics. 24 community groups shared information about what is going on in the community and 6 local junior sports club came together to put on some great football and rugby matches from Under 7's to Under 15's.
Ivan Usher’s son, Gregory, added: "It was a fantastic day, seeing everyone playing sports, and joining in. It was so important to my dad to teach life skills at a young age and a great way of doing this is through sport and activity. For older people, it is great to see what a range of activities are going on to help combat loneliness."
Jimmy Traynor, Chairman of AFC Tickton, said: "It was a great day for grassroots football. There is not a lot of activity in the off season in the East Riding for grassroots clubs, and it was great to get all the teams down to East Riding Leisure Beverley for a mini tournament and to watch some great football. We hope to be here again next year, bigger and better!

A new Health and Wellbeing session, Calming Play and Create, has been introduced to Active Coast. The first session was delivered to 45 children and parents, it involved experimenting with creativity of the hands, the body and the senses. Children were encouraged to truly engage with the core elements of nature and let it guide them towards their creations - whether that be creating their own movements, their own sand sculptures or their own thought processes towards nature in relation to slowing down and simply 'being'. The meditative sessions proved very popular and the feedback was positive across the board. Calming Play and Create is included throughout the year as part of our Active Coast Summer yearly programme.

Adult Services funds the Health and Wellbeing team to deliver a wide programme of activities and events designed to promote independence, reduce isolation and increase health and wellbeing amongst adults 50+, or adults with a disability or long-term health condition. The ‘let’s get moving’ programme has developed and grown over the past twelve years with a number of new initiatives starting over this time to enhance the programme and support more East Riding residents. The inter-generational project is currently a pilot but is proving to be a great success.
An initial invitation was sent out to a number of East Riding Primary Schools and Market Weighton Mount Pleasant C of E Junior School expressed an interest in being involved. Following this the local East Riding sheltered housing scheme was visited and residents were consulted as to whether they would like a visit from children at the school. The response was positive and an initial meet up was arranged for an afternoon in June.
A small group of year 5 children came along and residents joined them in the community room to take part in games and activities together. The children paired up with residents to enjoy table tennis, Boccia, giant dominoes, skittles and indoor board games. The residents asked if the children could return again before summer as they had enjoyed the event so much!

A second session was organised just before the end of term and this time children joined residents to chat about school summer holiday hopes and memories, discovering that the different generations had surprisingly similar experiences of the long school summer break. Games played this time included the old favourite Beetle Drive, lots of table tennis and the afternoon finished with a large group card game. Becky Lund, Welfare Support Worker for the East Riding said “I was hearing about the afternoon days after the event. Every single resident told me how much they had enjoyed it and how much they were looking forward to the next one”
Reedness Primary School also expressed an interest in taking part in the inter-generational project and a meeting was arranged to discuss possible ideas. The headteacher explained he would like to promote the school as a local community hub, to encourage Reedness residents to meet the children and school community and benefit from the social interaction and facilities the school has to offer. Invitations were sent out to local residents and the event advertised widely in the community.
The Reedness school hall was set up with an ‘afternoon tea’ and games tables and the room quickly filled up with local families and residents eager to take part in the event. The school children were invited to come into the hall to meet the adults and enjoy the refreshments together.
The pupils chatted about their classwork and then were encouraged to take part in games and activities alongside the residents. The hall was filled with excitement and laughter as everyone enjoyed playing games of Boccia, Jenga, Snakes and Ladders, Connect 4, Dominoes and cards. One resident commented on the impact the session had on the school pupils, observing “the children were comfortable, confident and at ease in such a setting, holding their own during conversations and interacting through play”. Another spoke of her own enjoyment of the session, saying “I'm a grandparent and new to the community - meeting people here today has been great”.
The Health and Wellbeing team hope to build on the success of the project in the coming months and extend the sessions to include other schools and localities in the East Riding.

The Active Towns bike library project, in partnership with the cycle charity R-evolution, are providing free cycle maintenance workshops during the summer of 2022 across the four Active Towns of Pocklington, Market Weighton, Goole and Howden. The workshops aim to encourage more cycling in the towns by increasing the knowledge, skills and confidence of residents, enabling them to participate in more cycling activities.
In June and July we visited Melbourne and Pocklington Scouts groups to teach essential cycle maintenance skills and repairs, helping the scouts to achieve their Cyclist Activity Badge.
The scouts brought their bikes along to the session and learnt how to do safety checks, adjust gears, check brakes, change their seats and handlebar heights and even check and adjust their cycle helmets. The workshops will hopefully ensure that the scouts are able to use their bikes confidently and safely over the summer holidays.
There are fortnightly bike libraries running in Pocklington, Market Weighton, Howden and Goole. For dates and more information please check activeeastriding.co.uk.
