Active Withernsea newsletter – Summer 2020

2020 was always going to be a busy year for Active Withernsea. However, with the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic we have had to adapt quickly in new ways to continue to support our community. This newsletter is the first in a series of regular updates to share information about the Active Withernsea pilot.

Active Withernsea welcomes investment from Sport England until 2025

The Active Withernsea team has received confirmation from Sport England that their investment plan has been approved and have been given the welcome news that the funding is to be extended to 2025 to really ensure long lasting change for the town.

The investment will be phased over five years and will concentrate on five key areas:

  • walking and cycling
  • open spaces
  • activities for children and young people (aged 8-25)
  • community development for individuals and groups to learn new skills and new ways of working
  • Kickstarter grants.

All the projects which emerge from these areas will be tasked to learn and share their community impact. In time, the pilot expects to support and nurture a community which builds and supports aspirations, connections, life skills and positive perceptions.

A real opportunity from this investment, which is both ground breaking and flexible, is the ask for the community to shape and co-create the projects the investment will support.

As a valued supporter of Active Withernsea, you will be invited to the investment announcement this summer.

Join People Need People - warm data labs move online

Since their inception at the beginning of 2020 and before the covid-19 pandemic, the warm data labs held by Active Withernsea enabled the community to discuss their aspirations for the town in a way which embraced complexity, relationships, challenges and opportunities.

To ensure progress continues these labs are moving online in a specially designed format called People need People. A further seven online meetings will continue across the summer and become a space where community members can formulate innovative ideas for the future of Withernsea. Starting weekly every Tuesday from 21 July (6 - 7.30pm), anyone interested is asked to sign up via Eventbrite.

Cycling in Withernsea

Sparked by a discussion on Facebook, three online meetings about cycling in Withernsea have taken place in June. With community support for cycling going forward, a working group will be set up to improve cycling in Withernsea.

Ideas currently being worked on include looking at the feasibility of opening up the railway line route, creating cycling routes and establishing best practice. The themes emerging from the meetings which are important to the community are safety (including road safety and signage), training, safely combining cycling and walking together, tourism and skills opportunities and encouraging access to cycling for all ages, abilities and incomes. More meetings to discuss progress are planned and anyone interested is encouraged to join the community Facebook group “Cycling in Withernsea” for updates.

The next online zoom meeting will be held on Wednesday 22 July (7 - 8.30pm), email jennifer.lount@eastriding.gov.uk for meeting details.

Free training course - taster session 19 August

We are inviting you to join our taster session to find out more about Let's Connect, an innovative training course which encourages mindfulness, listening skills and insight in to perceptions of personal bias. The course will be available to any interested Withernsea residents through Active Withernsea.

Adapted from specialist training the Active Withernsea team received from the University of Aberystwyth this training will be hosted online and aims to support anyone who is active in their community to build harmonious relationships and understanding of others. The training will take place in eight 1.5 hour morning sessions, running throughout September and October and also includes two separate coaching sessions.

“After the training I know myself better and I am much kinder to myself now. I have more understanding of how some people in my life are the way they are and I found the whole thing fun and interactive!”

Music making opportunity with Orchestras Live

Unleash creativity from lockdown with this new opportunity with Active Withernsea and Orchestras Live. A taster session was held online on the 14 July to begin the project but new members are very much welcome, message active.withernsea@eastriding.gov.uk to join.

Active Withernsea have teamed up with national music producers Orchestras Live to work together on a project that could help ease social isolation and make people feel better during the lockdown. There are lots of ways to get involved and with the expertise and goodwill in the community and the help of Manchester Camerata orchestra everyone can get involved in some way.

Orchestras Live and Manchester Camerata orchestra have been working in Withernsea for the last four years as part of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Classically Yours programme. The idea is to help the town have a voice by creating a new piece of music to share with everyone in the community. It is hoped that performances and ideas will include the eight care homes, where staff are working so hard to look after their residents as well as many more groups in the town.

Love Exploring launches in Withernsea

Love Exploring, the interactive virtual reality app, will be launching in Withersea this Summer. Featuring a Dinosaur Safari and a Fairy Trail, the app is a fun way for families to take a stroll together. Following a route on the free to download app, this is a great way for locals and tourists to enjoy and explore the town. The Withernsea routes will be live on the app from August .

Adapted bikes

Cycles which are adapted for additional needs will be available to Cascade and Victoria Day Centre residents this summer through partnership working with Active Withernsea. This is part of the team’s ambitions to improve cycling opportunities for everyone.

The shop at @170 Queen Street opens

This summer the Active Withernsea community space will open and we'll be based in the shop at 170 Queen Street. More information will be shared around opening hours and social distancing in line with public health guidelines.

Covid-19 actions

Throughout the pandemic the team have been working to support the town. From being part of the community hubs which offered assistance to the most vulnerable to finding new ways to communicate with the community – it has been a busy few months. Residents of the town may have seen our zine and postcard project “Heard in With” which were delivered to every household in the town. The team have also been working on mapping the whole and generous community response to the pandemic, including the relationships between groups. We have been capturing stories about what it was like to live in Withernsea during the pandemic and ensuring these are recorded for the future. We have also launched a new website www.activewithernsea.org, and new information about our programme is being updated regularly.

Looking ahead

With even more creative and innovative ideas on the horizon, 2020 is certainly shaping up to be an exciting year for Active Withernsea. In September, Kickstarter Grants are expected to open, this is a funding opportunity for new and innovative ideas which focus on supporting start-up entrepreneurial ideas which have activity at their core. The team know there will be great community enthusiasm for this and more information will be shared over the summer. Another initiative launching in the not so distant future will be a partnership project called “Doorstep Games” which will see local activity providers going in to open spaces to deliver fun social, mental and physical activities.

And finally...

The Active Withernsea team have produced this update with the very best of intentions to inform and share activities which we are working with our community to create opportunities for a healthier and happier Withernsea.
