EPSRC Health Technologies Strategy publication
EPSRC have published a new strategy for Health Technologies. This is a refreshed vision for EPSRC to stimulate advances in transformative engineering and physical sciences research to have a significant impact in health and ultimately to enable people to live healthier lives.
The strategy refresh project was intended to engage the community in identifying and exploring some of the major health challenges over the next 10 years and the role of the engineering and physical sciences in addressing these. An inclusive process of community engagement was undertaken over a 12-month period. This included a series of workshops, roundtable meetings and written contributions via an open survey. It involved representatives from academia, industry, early career researchers, healthcare professionals and patient and public representatives

EPSRC Rehabilitation Technologies Network+ Grand Challenge Workshop - 5 and 6 July 2023
The Next Generation Rehabilitation Technologies Network (RTN) is funded through an EPSRC Healthcare Technologies Network Plus award. If you are interested in joining the Network, you can become a member by completing the form on the RTN website
The Rehabilitation Technologies Network are pleased to invite members to apply to attend a Grand Challenge Workshop on “Transformative Technologies for Neurological Rehabilitation”. Participants will help identify research priorities and questions of central interest, as well as potential disruptive technologies and solutions to clinical challenges. The workshop will be on 5 and 6 July 2023 at the Jubilee Hotel, Nottingham. Applications to join the workshop must be in by 5pm, Monday 8 May 2023.
Up to £100,000 of RTN funding will be made available to fund interdisciplinary feasibility studies arising from this workshop.
If you have any questions or would like to get in touch, please contact the Network Manager, Ginny Birney, email: rehabtech@nottingham.ac.uk

Research and partnership hubs for health technologies – outline stage
Apply for funding to establish a large-scale, multidisciplinary research hub in an area of importance to the delivery of EPSRC’s strategy for health technologies with a focus of research and partnership working.
Proposals should address strategic, long-term research challenges and plans for partnership working to maximise the impact from this investment.
There will be an information webinar about this call at 10am on Friday 12 May 2023. To register, please see the link on the web page for the call (under funding opportunity 'additional information') or click here.

Accelerating the medicines revolution – outline stage
This funding opportunity looks to support a diverse portfolio of projects that bring transformative ideas to solve bottlenecks across the pipeline, from discovery to deployment. Proposals must address the grand challenge of delivering an accelerated, sustainable pathway to future medicines.
We encourage interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary projects. You must consider manufacturability from the outset.

Population health improvement network of clusters (cross UKRI call)
Apply for funding to lead a population health improvement research cluster. Up to 7 research clusters will be funded, each addressing a separate yet complementary challenge. Together they will form an interdisciplinary network, which will generate research to improve the health of communities across the UK, reduce health inequalities and develop and evaluate effective, long-lasting and environmentally sustainable interventions.
This initiative aims to explicitly include people who typically have not applied their expertise to improving population health before and to work together with researchers already in the area to catalyse creative and innovative approaches that build on and synergise existing strengths and build new capabilities.
The call opened on 27 April 2023. A final virtual networking event to facilitate formation of research clusters will take place on 4 May 2023. Please register to attend.

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) - Multidisciplinary Project Award and Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Award
CRUK Multidisciplinary Project Award
The aim of this award is to generate creative research ideas and explore their applicability in cancer research.
The outline application deadline is 6 July 2023
Further information about the CRUK Multidisciplinary Project Award can be found on the CRUK website
CRUK Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Award
Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Awards fund science to drive transformational change in how and when early cancers and pre-cancerous states are diagnosed
The application deadline is 15 June 2023.
Further information about the CRUK Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Award can be found on the CRUK website.
For both calls, CRUK welcomes proposals across all engineering and physical science disciplines including physics, engineering, mathematical and computational modelling, chemical and molecular sciences, materials science, molecular/tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
As part of CRUK’s longstanding strategic partnership with EPSRC, there is an opportunity for any successful applications with relevant research components in these areas to be jointly supported by both CRUK and the EPSRC.

Engineering healthier environments to prevent ill health: survey
EPSRC would like to invite you to participate in our survey. We would like to understand more about the challenges and opportunities for Engineering and Physical Sciences around engineering healthier environments where people live and work to prevent ill health.
Engineering healthier environments is a key priority in our new health technologies strategy. The results of this survey will help inform future EPSRC activities around this topic.
Please complete our survey by Wednesday 17 May to have your views heard.
In this survey, you will be also able to express your interest in participating in a workshop on this topic.
We would appreciate it if you could please promote and share the survey with your networks.
The early detection of cancer conference, 10-12 October 2023, London
Cancer Research UK, Canary Center at Stanford, and OHSU Knight Cancer Institute present the Early Detection of Cancer Conference series. The annual conference brings together experts in early detection from multiple disciplines to share ground-breaking research and progress in the field.
The Conference is part of a long-term commitment to invest in early detection research, to understand the biology behind early-stage cancers, find new detection and screening methods, and enhance uptake and accuracy of screening.

'Biohybrid' device could restore function in paralysed limbs
Researchers have developed a new type of neural implant that could restore limb function to amputees and others who have lost the use of their arms or legs.
The research was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), Wellcome and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme.
In a study carried out in rats, researchers from the University of Cambridge used the device to improve the connection between the brain and paralysed limbs. The device combines flexible electronics and human stem cells – the body’s ‘reprogrammable’ master cells – to better integrate with the nerve and drive limb function.
