 DE Theme Programme Advisory Board Vacancies
The Digital Economy Theme has open vacancies on its Programme Advisory Board (PAB). We are seeking to recruit 4 new PAB members to start in January 2020 with the following expertise/career stage requirements: • Creative Industries (Academic or Industrial User, number of vacancies: 2) • Financial Services (Industrial User only, number of vacancies: 1) • Open, Early Career (Academic only, number of vacancies: 1)
The PAB provides key advice on DE strategy throughout the year via periodic meetings, and we expect its members to act as DE representatives and advocates within the community.
The Healthcare Technologies Theme currently has 1 open vacancy on its Strategic Advisory Team (SAT) in Digital Health.

 Web Science Institute hosts international summer school
Web Science Trust annual Web Science Summer School will be hosted by the University of Southampton in September 2019 and will focus on Web Science and AI for Future Society. The programme includes sessions on Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Ethics, Data Visualisation and keynote talks by Professor Susan Halford, President of the British Sociological Association, and Professor Dame Wendy Hall, co-author of the Government’s recent AI Review.

 UKRI EPSRC Regional Town Meetings
Professor Lynn Gladden, EPSRC Executive Chair, would like to meet with the engineering and physical sciences community through a series of town meetings. All stakeholders interested in EPSRC are invited to express an interest to attend. Whether you are from academia, industry, government departments or the third sector and whatever your career stage, you are very welcome. Those who do not traditionally engage with EPSRC but are seeking to increase this engagement are particularly encouraged.The deadline for submissions is 31 July 2019.

Artificial Intelligence Update: AI Turing fellowships and AI review
Following the first wave of Turing AI Fellowships, EPSRC is currently developing the second phase of the investment. Although subject to change, we anticipate that the investment will focus in a) world leading AI researchers, and b) high potential mid-career researchers. Applications to this programme will be expected to have significant stakeholder engagement from industry, public and third sectors.
As part of its AI Review, UKRI recently held four regional community workshops. The outputs from these have been used to identify a number of topics that will be further explored over the summer and early autumn.

Security for all in an AI enabled society
The Digital Economy Theme will seek to commit up to £9M (at 80%FEC) to support four to six research projects which address challenges that lie at the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and cyber-security. The call will close at 16:00 on 10 October 2019.

Responsible Natural Language Processing for Intelligent Interfaces
The EPSRC ICT Theme has launched a call in ‘Natural Language Processing’. A budget of up to £4 million will be available to support a range of novel research projects in natural language processing, with a particular focus on areas of research which support advances in the development of intelligent interfaces and data science. The call will close at 16:00 on 24 September 2019.

Digital technologies and social media to prevent non-communicable diseases
The UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP) has a pre-announcement of the second funding round with a priority area on using digital technologies and social media to deliver interventions to prevent non-communicable diseases. The closing date will be 16:00 on 14 November 2019.

Telling Tales of Engagment Competition
The Digital Economy theme intends to launch a ‘Telling Tales of Engagement Competition’ (TTE) in August 2019 to help capture and promote the impact of UKRI funded DE research. Applications are open to teams as well as individuals. Applications will be welcome from all academic career stages (ranging from PhD students to established researchers), as well as from industry, users and the third sector. More details will follow in the TTE Call document, which will be published in August 2019. This call will be run in a similar way to the previous years.

 Prosperity Partnerships to address generational challenges across the globe
Pioneering new partnerships have been launched to speed up the production of medicines, utilise Artificial Intelligence to complete household tasks, develop ultra-high strength alloys for the automotive industry and create new materials that will not make a noise underwater, reducing its harmful impact on marine wildlife.

Established in 2009 and centred at the University of Nottingham, the Horizon's Digital Economy Research hub brings together a team with expertise spanning a wide variety of disciplines to address the challenges in the Digital Economy. Horizon's latest brochure includes examples of research, success stories, impact and what’s next.

 Digital Data-Centric Platforms in the Age of IoT - Call for chapters
The book series, World Scientific Reference on Data-Centric Digital Platforms in the Age of IoT, provides a comprehensive and systematic coverage of the methodologies, technologies, and applications that enable effective planning, evaluation and management of big data and smart device platforms. Potential authors are welcome to submit proposals for chapters on the suggested topics or other related topics that may fit within the scope of the reference set. Abstract deadline is 15 August 2019.

ARCHANGEL - Trusted Archives of Digital Public Records
Archives are the lens through which future generations will see the events of today. The Digital Economy Theme-funded ARCHANGEL project, led by Professor John Collomosse at the University of Surrey, in collaboration with The National Archives and the Open Data Institute (ODI), fuses AI and Blockchain technologies to help safeguard the integrity and future sustainability of our digital public archives. A video explaining the ARCHANGEL project is available on the ARCHANGEL website, and the project has also been featured on Fox News.
