Elmbridge news
You are receiving this newsletter due to the extreme heat alert. It contains information to help and support you as the heat increases.
Supporting you through the extreme heat alert
Hot weather can be dangerous, especially for the very young or very old, or those with chronic disease. We have information to support you through the extreme heat alert:
Protect your skin
Ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun can damage your eyes and skin. Don’t get caught out by the strength of the sun.
Advice is available from NHS: sunscreen and sun safety.
Reduce the risks from hot weather
Be prepared and take steps to reduce the risks both for yourself and those friends and relatives that may be vulnerable.
Go to Healthy Surrey: Heatwave advice for more information.
Stay hydrated
Make sure you are drinking the correct amount of fluids every day. Even if the weather is not as hot as you expect or you are less active, the body still needs to be well hydrated with water (or tea, coffee or juice, but not alcohol).
Heat-health alert service
The Met Office operates a heat-health alert service. In association with the Department of Health they decide on the level of responses to recorded temperatures. Visit Met Office: Heat-health alert service for more information.
Stay water aware during the heat alert
With the hot weather, it’s natural to spend time by the water, but rivers can still be dangerous, with cold temperatures and strong currents. Tragically, lives are lost each year. Parents and carers play an important role by talking to young people about risks, staying safe, and knowing what to do in an emergency.
Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) for rough sleepers
SWEP has been activated, this means if there are rough sleepers or individuals experiencing street homelessness in Elmbridge, temporary accommodation can be provided.
The temporary accommodation provided for this period of SWEP is dependent on availability on the day, and may be a referral to a night hostel, out of borough accommodation or bed and breakfast accommodation.
 Earlier bin collections
Due to the heat alert, this week our collection crews will be leaving their depots earlier than usual, to get started on bin collections before the temperature rises. Please leave your bins out the night before.
