Elmbridge news
The latest news from around the borough brought to you by your local council.
Support for Afghan nationals
Last week we were pleased to confirm the arrival of Afghan nationals who would be moving into temporary accommodation in the borough, funded by the Home Office. The families will be rehoused across the entire country into more settled housing over the coming weeks and months.
We are extremely grateful to residents across the borough and county, as well as our partners, for their generosity in asking how they can help and make donations to support these families. If you would like to know more, please see our website:
Garden waste service
As many of you will be aware, to protect our core waste service the difficult decision has been made to suspend our garden waste collection service. A full update on what we are doing to resolve the situation and what you can do with your garden waste is available:
Let's get Elmbridge moving
To mark National Fitness Day (22 September), Older Person’s Day (1 October), and the launch of our new physical activity strategy 'Getting Elmbridge Moving', we’re inviting you to take part in free taster sessions across the borough.
Whether you're young or old, getting back into exercise or wishing to try something new, there's something for everyone.
A good cause for celebration
The Elmbridge Community Lottery celebrated an impressive milestone last month when it reached £50,000 in donations to Elmbridge good causes. The Lottery, which launched its first prize draw in March last year, has raised money every week for organisations and groups running across the borough.
Tech helps Cobham Link members
To support digital inclusion in Elmbridge, our Cobham Link team have been provided with iPads to help their members get online and develop their digital confidence. As Cobham Link supports adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities or autism who want to be as independent as possible, it was vital for their members to be able to have a means of getting online to join support sessions remotely during the lockdowns.
Cobham Link has now reopened and is welcoming back its members with iPad training every Tuesday morning. The group has started with the basics - turning on the iPad, entering the password, using an internet search engine, and is now progressing to video calling. The next step is online shopping and of course guidance on how to use the internet safely for those using social media.
