BBQ causes fire in East Devon woodland

This week, crews from Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, and Seaton Fire Stations attended a serious fire in woodland at Fire Beacon Hill. The fire was caused by a barbecue being used on wooden decking within the woods. The flames spread from the decking into the surrounding structure and vegetation.
With the hot weather and dry ground continuing, the risk of wildfires remains high. Small fires can spread quickly, turning an unattended BBQ or bonfire into a wildfire covering acres of land. Please help prevent wildfires by:
- Disposing of cigarettes responsibly - never drop them on the ground, even if you think they are extinguished
- Not using fires, barbecues, camping stoves, or naked flames of any kind. Bring a picnic instead, and take all rubbish home – especially glass bottles
- If you spot a wildfire, call 999 immediately and give the exact location
Cliff fall at Jacob's Ladder Beach in Sidmouth
 Following a cliff fall at Jacob's Ladder Beach, we want to remind residents and visitors to stay well clear of the cliff base and to follow all warning signs, safety barriers, and instructions.
Cliff falls are a natural and unpredictable occurrence along the East Devon coast. The cliffs in this area are made of soft rock, which is particularly prone to erosion, rock falls, and landslides that can happen at any time - especially following periods of heavy rain or extended dry weather.Â

Summer brings increased traffic across our area as residents and visitors travel for holidays, days out, and major events. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are encouraging road users to take simple steps before setting off to reduce the risk of breakdowns, collisions, and vehicle fires.Â

Temporary change to fridge and freezer collections
 Collections of fridges and freezers through the bulky household waste collection service are temporarily paused.
This is due to a national shortage of recycling and treatment capacity, caused by a combination of treatment plant closures, and the loss of a major fridge re-processing facility, following a fire. As a result, councils across the country are experiencing difficulties managing these items.
If you have an unwanted fridge or freezer, please hold onto it until this issue has been resolved, so that it can be disposed of properly.
East Devon District Council (EDDC) are working closely with Devon County Council (DCC) to help find a solution. DCC arranges the recycling and treatment of fridges and freezers collected by EDDC. Further updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available.

 Please place grass cuttings, flowers, small tree branches (Up to 10cms thick), loose leaves, shrub, and hedge trimmings in your green waste bin.
Green waste bins must never be used for household refuse or recycling. Collection crews will not collect large branches (Over 10cm thick), turf, earth, soil, stones, or gravel. Pet bedding, food including fruit or vegetables, plant pots, plant labels/markers and other plastic items, will also not be collected.

Free Beach Heroes activities in Exmouth for familiesÂ
 This summer (Saturday 25 July to Friday 4 September 2026), children and families are invited to become Beach Heroes through a series of free, fun-filled coastal adventures in Exmouth.
Co-ordinated by Sideshore Community, delivered by local beach-based organisations and funded by East Devon District Council, Beach Heroes helps young people discover the coast, build confidence, learn vital sea safety skills, and take positive action to care for the local environment.
Families can take part in six exciting missions, including:
- sea safety with the RNLI
- sea Swimming with Sea Swim Devon
- habitat exploration with Charlie's Beach School
- beach cleans with Plastic Free Exmouth
- a self-guided Coastal Connector walk with Yoga & Wellbeing with Anna
- a self-guided Ocean Artist activity created by Rosie Johnson Illustrates
Children collect stamps in their Beach Heroes Passport and earn beads for their bracelet as they complete each mission, with every activity designed to inspire a lifelong love and respect of the coast.
