How to stay safe at the beach
The warm weather gives residents and visitors alike the chance to enjoy our beautiful district, but it is important to understand how to stay safe while enjoying the coastline, both in the water and on the beach.
Over the past week, Lifeguards, Coast Watch, and ambulance services have helped many people, including swimmers who were struggling in the water, and children who were stuck after being buried chest-deep in sand.
Help keep our beaches tidy
Our beaches and public spaces have been very busy due to the warm weather, meaning lots more rubbish at the bins along the seafronts.
Help look after our environment by:
- making sure the bin has space for your rubbish
- taking rubbish home, if you can't find a bin
- bringing bags for your rubbish with you
- using re-usable products wherever possible
Thank you for playing your part, and to our StreetScene teams who have worked hard over extra hours to tackle this issue.
Limiting parking disruption at our seaside towns
The heatwave brought lots of visitors to our seaside towns, and we’ve been encouraging drivers to use registered parking. Details can be found on the council website and East Devon App. Designated parking areas help keep vehicles safe and secure, roads clear for emergency access, and protect residents and businesses from disruption.
Reduce the risk of wildfires

Most wildfires are started by human behaviour, such as barbecues, discarded cigarettes, or glass lying on dry ground, magnifying the sun’s rays. In recent years, wildfire incidents have occurred in the East Devon countryside, such as at Woodbury Common.
