Bird ringing breakthrough: East Devon Warbler rediscovered in Africa
 Credit: Sue Smith
The Axe Estuary Ringing Group recorded its first African recovery from Seaton Wetlands, after a Reed Warbler ringed on the reserve in August was recaptured 4,365 km away at Kartong Bird Observatory in The Gambia. The finding highlights the extraordinary migratory journeys of these small birds and the vital role long‑term monitoring plays in understanding population changes.

Exmouth Community College upgrades floodlights with Carbon Action Fund grant
Left-to-right: Councillor Nick Hookway (East Devon District Council's Portfolio Holder for Culture, Leisure, Sport, and Tourism), Elizabeth Lee (Exmouth Community College Community Governor) and Jen Fook (Executive Director of Communications, Operations and Growth from the Ted Wragg Trust)
Exmouth Community College received a £25,000 grant from East Devon District Council’s Carbon Action Fund to upgrade the floodlights on its pitches to energy-efficient LED lighting. The Carbon Action Fund is part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund programme, which provides councils with central government funding to support local growth, community initiatives, and sustainable projects.
The school’s floodlit astroturf pitches are the only year-round facilities of their kind in Exmouth, widely used by local sports clubs, schools, and the wider community.
Scheduled review of leisure service underway
East Devon facilities have been run for many years by LED Community Leisure. As part of the current management agreement, and in line with normal practice, the council is running a full and competitive tender process. This allows the council to respond to changes in the market and choose the most sustainable and cost-effective option for the future.
All leisure services will continue as normal during this process.
