Jacob's Ladder steps closed for refurbishment
Jacob’s Ladder steps remain closed following a recent structural inspection, which identified repairs needed to certain structural components. Public safety is East Devon District Council's (EDDC) priority, and a careful, considered approach is being taken to ensure the steps can be repaired appropriately and brought back into use when it is safe to do so.
As a Grade II listed structure, Jacob’s Ladder requires a specialist repair approach that protects its historic character as well as its structural integrity. EDDC are working closely with structural timber specialists and the Conservation Team to review the inspection findings in detail, confirm the most suitable repair method, and make sure any works are undertaken to the correct standard.
EDDC recognises how important Jacob’s Ladder is to the local area as a well-used access route and a valued local landmark. Everyone’s continued patience while this work progresses is appreciated. The steps will remain closed until further notice, and we will provide a further update as soon as we are able to share more information.
Planned maintenance to council's parking portal
Some East Devon District Council parking services such as buying permits, and appealing or paying penalty charge notices (PCNs) will be unavailable on Monday 16 - Tuesday 17 February 2026 due to planned maintenance work. During the maintenance period, these PCNs will be on-hold, to ensure their status does not progress.

Love the environment this Valentine's Day
Be a super-recycler and squash your small pieces of aluminium foil into a larger ball. This helps the plant in the depot separate out aluminium foil, so that all of it can be recycled, along with other aluminium items such as cans, aerosols, and trays. Aluminium is the most valuable material crews collect at the kerbside, and it can be recycled over and over again.
