Upgraded play area now open

Transport themed play area equipment at Willow Walk in Honiton

Children across East Devon will be treated to ten new play areas thanks to a £1.1million cash injection from the district council, with the remaining costs covered by contributions from developers.

The upgrades at Willow Walk in Honiton are complete, and the gates are open – just in time for summer adventures. With a fun new transport-themed design, the play area is a wonderful place for children to explore and enjoy the outdoors while families spend time together.

News about the upgraded play area openings will be shared in upcoming Residents' Update newsletters and on East Devon District Council's social media channels.

£1.4 million coastal protection work to start late August at Seaton Hole Cliffs

Important work, scheduled to begin next month, has been designed to reduce erosion and lower the risk of cliff falls, helping protect the coastline and 41 nearby homes, including a care home.

Three councils unite to back South East Devon’s crucial wildlife sites

A new strategy to protect three of South East Devon’s most important nature reserves - Exe Estuary, East Devon Pebblebed Heaths, and Dawlish Warren - has been approved by all three local councils.

Creating community forests on National Trust's Killerton Estate

The planned addition of 6.9km of permissive paths plus improvements to existing muddy paths across the Killerton Estate will improve public access to new woodlands and wider parkland, for local communities including Cranbrook and West Clyst. 

The National Trust is working in partnership with Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest with funding from the Trees for Climate programme to establish and restore 230 acres of woodland.

Free rainbow summer trail. Friday 25th July - 1st September. Illustration of wildlife, plants, and a rainbow

Free rainbow activity trail at Seaton Wetlands

Start your quest by picking up a special trail map from outside the Lookout or Discovery Hut. Along the way, you'll engage your senses to discover nature's secrets, spot cool wildlife, and complete fun challenges at each stop.

At every activity station, colour in a piece of your rainbow trail map. Once you've finished the trail, return your completed rainbow for a chance to win a bug hunting kit.

The trail will run from Friday 25 July 2025 until Monday 1 September 2025.

Trio of exhibitions celebrate Sidmouth Folk Festival

A free public art trail showcasing photography, film, and Sidmouth Folk Festival history artefacts will be seen by the many thousands that attend the festival (Friday 1 August - Friday 8 August 2025) as well as by residents and visitors through the summer and autumn.

At the Sidmouth Wallspace, you can find 'May Day Madness' by Kyle Baker, until Friday 19 September 2025. Discover 'A Small Quiet English Town' and 'Traditions of Folk' by TPLfilms in the Market Square telephone box micro museums until Wednesday 1 October 2025. JJ Waller's and Kyle Baker's 'A Sidmouth Folk Festival Portrait' photographic exhibition is on display at the Riverside Artspace in the Sensory Garden until November 2025.

Honiton's first Pride this Saturday

Honiton Pride will take place from 6pm - late on Saturday 26 July 2025 at Boston Tea Party. The event was organised to celebrate the town's LGBTQ+ community, and to raise money and awareness for the charity 'Just Like Us'.

Tickets are available from Boston Tea Party and Tesco in Honiton, for £15, cash only. Entry includes food (meat and veggie options), plus entertainment.

Join the 804th year of Hot Pennies

Pennies were once heated up and thrown by affluent people who delighted in seeing peasants burn their fingers collecting the coins. Whilst the tradition has continued, nowadays the pennies at the procession are merely warm. This year's event begins at 12pm on Tuesday 29 July 2025 outside the Volunteer on Honiton High Street.

Explore the nature on your doorstep during Heath Week

Find out about the marvellous moths at Bystock Meadow from 11am on Tuesday 29 July 2025, during Devon Wildlife Trust's annual Bystock Day event.

You can also join a free guided heathland walk from Four Firs Car Park from 10am - 11.30am on Wednesday 30 July 2025.

Take part in the consultation before the deadline of 5pm on Tuesday 30 September 2025.

Help shape the final recommendation about the future of local government.

Areas like Devon, which currently operate under a two-tier system (with both district and county councils), are now being asked to consider moving to a unitary authority model, where a single council is responsible for all local services.

Complete the online survey before the deadline of Monday 11 August 2025.

Choose a name for East Devon's new community

Four possible names have been shortlisted for East Devon's New Community, inspired by local history, the area’s geography and environment, and previous public feedback.

Find out why these options have been suggested, and rank them in order of preference, before the deadline of 5pm on Tuesday 26 August 2025.


If you, or someone you know, is unable to complete an online survey, request a paper version, by emailing engagement@eastdevon.gov.uk. Please submit this request at least four days before the consultation closes, so that we receive the responses before the deadline.
