East Devon marks VE Day

To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, a flag was raised at East Devon District Council's Blackdown House headquarters in Honiton, by Chair of the Council, Councillor Eleanor Rylance, on Thursday 8 May 2025. Councillor Rylance was joined by council staff and members of our military community to honour the heroes of World War II.
Ceremonies across the UK have marked the anniversary this week, with events such as beacon lighting in Exmouth and Sidmouth taking place in East Devon.

Donate clothes from your kerbside
Good quality textiles and shoes, bagged and placed securely in your kerbside recycling box, will go to The Salvation Army for reuse or sale, which supports people in need.
East Devon District Council's scheme is a textile reuse scheme, rather than a recycling scheme, therefore as your textiles will be reused, it is important to keep them clean and dry.
We are unable to collect duvets, pillows, and cushions, please place those items in your wheeled grey refuse bin or take them to the recycling centre.
For those of you wondering if your textiles or shoes are of good quality for collection, we suggest, that if you ask yourself, ‘Would I buy this from a charity shop?’ If the answer is yes, then please place them out for collection. If not, then please place in your wheeled grey refuse bin, which will then go to the Energy from Waste Facility in Exeter.
During times of wet weather, you may wish to hang on to your textiles and put them out for collection in a drier period to ensure they don’t get wet and are reusable.
Find out what you can recycle in East Devon, by visiting the A - Z search tool on the council's website.

Celebrating Sidmouth’s Festival Circuit, a new vibrant digital art piece is now on show at Sidmouth Wallspace, until Tuesday 3 June 2025. This colourful artwork by Tara Greifenberg, perfectly captures the lively energy and festival atmosphere that has become synonymous with Sidmouth’s grassroots music movement.
Inspired by the eclectic mix of music that is staged in spring and summer, it celebrates the unique ecosystem for grassroots music. Through a four-way collaboration championed by Sidmouth Sea Fest, with The Sidmouth Folk Festival, Sidmouth International Jazz & Blues Festival and Sidmouth SidyFest, this celebration of music is also a demonstration of the power of collective working, pooling ideas, and resources.
