East Devon District Council (EDDC) has been preparing a 2025-2030 Housing Strategy.

As part of the process, we invited feedback on what could be included in the strategy. We have carefully reviewed all consultation responses. Following this work, a draft of the Strategy has been created.

We now welcome any additional comments or suggestions to ensure the strategy is as effective and comprehensive as possible. Your input will be carefully considered before the Strategy is finalised. The strategy can be viewed below:

Last chance to shape East Devon’s Future: Local Plan ready to go to Government inspector

A six-week consultation on East Devon’s new Local Plan is being held before it is reviewed by a Government inspector and after that it should be adopted.

The document being considered, outlines what development should go from now until 2042.

The consultation, taking place between 13 February and 31 March, is the last chance for residents to share their comments on the plan before the review by the Government inspector.

Thousands of people have already commented on proposals outlined in the new Local Plan including on how many new homes need to be built and where.

The plan sets out various other aims, including:

  • How the district could address the climate change emergency;
  • How and where new jobs should be created how we should support our town centres;
  • How East Devon protects its built heritage and natural environment and
  • How EDDC intends to deliver housing to meet the needs of local residents and ensure new homes are net zero carbon ensuring they are more efficient and cheaper to run.

The new Local Plan will be a key document when making planning decisions in East Devon.

Everyone who lives, works and spends time in the district has been asked to share their views about the future of the district as part the consultation.

To make a representation to the consultation visit the link https://eastdevonlocalplanreg19.commonplace.is

Public Spaces Protection Order Full Review

East Devon District Council has three existing Public Spaces Protection Orders which apply across the district. These include a Dog Control PSPO, Seashores and Promenades PSPO, and Control of Anti-Social Behaviour & the Consumption of Intoxicating Substances in Exmouth PSPO.

Some of the requirements within each PSPO apply to the district as a whole, and some to specific areas such as children’s play areas and beaches.

We are required to review each PSPO every three years and during this process we are considering some changes. We want your thoughts on the current requirements and proposed changes.

This consultation closes on the 28 April 3pm.

East Devon New Settlement

Thanks to everyone who contributed to a review of proposals for East Devon’s newest town last year.  The masterplan is currently being revised in response to feedback received. The updated masterplan will be available for public consultation in May 2025 as part of an additional consultation for the new Local Plan.

East Devon District Council’s new Local Plan identifies that a second new town will be required to meet housing need in East Devon. The new town will create a self-sufficient, healthy and dynamic community with at least 8,000 homes, alongside employment space and community facilities, with a rich and biodiverse network of linking green spaces. The town will be home to a wide range of facilities, from schools, doctors and shops to parks and playing pitches, along with transport and sewage infrastructure improvements.

The Local Plan identifies an area south of Exeter Airport and the A30 and north of the A3052 as the preferred location for the new community, which was approved by EDDC Councillors in December 2023,  Strategic Planning Committee, 05/12/2023, Item 7
